Worried about license endorsement being too slow

Published

I just got my first camp job (YAY!) and immediately started working on the license endorsement since I have just 26 business days before I have to start. I am super nervous, looking at all the different 3-9 business day steps!! Am I crazy to think this can be done? I'm applying for a Pennsylvania license, from Ohio. I know they issue temporary practice permits typically in a couple weeks, but the background checks seem to take a long time, and I have to get 3! (2 previous states plus federal)

Any tips to speed things up?

You should be worried. PA is crazy backed up and is taking a very long time to process things. Get cozy once a week and call the BON. Be nice explain your situation and hope someone will review and approve it on the spot. Be aware most of the time they will simply tell you “it’s all there pending review, they are reviewed in the order received”

the only check you can’t speed up is the finger prints. The child line can be done instantly in Harrisburg (I know that doesn’t help you much). State police is online and pretty quick.

The camp I work at is in PA also and we had issues with licenses taking a long time last summer. The summer before I did the permit because it was taking longer than expected and I feel like I got it pretty quickly.

Hoping not to have the issue again this year! We went 2 weeks last year with one nurse who couldn't do any patient care because her license had not come through.

Update: FBI fingerprints were received by FBI last Thursday, and I got the results by email on Wednesday, so less than a week. Application now submitted and awaiting review... fingers crossed!

Update: I logged in tonight and I have a license! Not just a temporary one, a real one!! Yowza, FAST!!

Congratulations! As a long time resident of the state I am floored that you didn’t have more trouble. I’m glad for us both that the BON seems to be digging itself out of the quagmire of the new computer system

Why PA continues to dig in their heels about joining the compact is beyond me. I do camp nursing in ME--thank goodness it is my original state of licensure so there is less hassle. But I currently have 3 active nursing licenses (2 in compact states!) courtesy of my PA residency. Ugh.

PA is very slow, however you are "in process"

I am happy to report that Pennsylvania has a Nurse Licensure Compact bill in the state legislature, and several state nurse-legislators support this bill. For the most up to date information on the NLC visit www.ncsbn.org or visit the Pennsylvania State Legislature page. The bill is SB 655.
