Worried about GPA to get into nursing school? A few other questions too...

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi all,

I am currently in my last semester before applying to Lord Fairfax Community College. Frankly, I am burnt out. So far I have maintained a 4.0 in all my pre-reqs, however, this semester, I just don't think I am gonna be able to pull off straight A's again.

Right now I'm taking math (but math is developmental so it is ungraded, only pass or fail), developmental psychology, survey of chemistry, and anatomy and physiology 2. I expect A's in everything except A&P. I will probably get a B in that.

So my question is, what was your GPA when you applied to nursing school?

I wouldn't be worried about anything except, my school only counts the GPA from the last 12 credits you have taken when selecting applicants. This makes me feel like all my hard work in previous semesters is worthless.

I am planning on applying to both my school's RN and LPN program.

Also, as a side note: Do you think LPNs will be phased out? Can they be?

I just would love to hear other people's experiences (especially if you are going to LFCC!). The school makes it seem as if everybody has a perfect 4.0 to get in, and that stresses me out ALOT!

Thanks :)

Hi hamdog,

First things first, don't think that you can't achieve anything that you don't put your mind to (espically with grades!!). I have changed my mind a few times about my career(s) since things in my various choices have steadily gone downhill, which led me to nursing since I now work for a great hospital. I already have a bachelors degree and my GPA is 3.5, my pre-reqs were 3.8. Do you have more school options to apply to? I personally wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket (but that's just me). Also, I don't know about VA, but I live in NJ and LPNs are defintely a thing of the past in my hospital. Since a lot of hospitals around me are going for magnet status, they don't really want to hire RN's with just associates degrees and I think we only have 2 LPN's in the entire hospital (about to retire). I think if you're ok with working at a SNF or rehab you'll do great. :) Now, with all that being said, I applied to a bunch of ABSN programs (I've gotten accepted to all except one I'm waiting for decision on), so I can't give you the absolute best advice, but I just want you to know that I feel like all community colleges act like everyone needs a 4.0 to get in which is ridiculous because the accelerated programs are much more lax, including Ivy League. The community college I went to to finish my pre-reqs was psycho about their admissions into their RN/LPN programs, so much so that I would've just gone somewhere else for the principle. Just do your best with everything and don't sweat the small stuff, you'll get through it and be a wonderful nurse someday. :)
