I contacted the RN Coordinator at the CC I will be attending. I wanted to know how they select people into the Program, and she said it was on a Point System. Can anyone explain that to me? What are they looking for? I'm kind of irritated by this. Its a CC, not a state school, so I don't know why they are so picky. Especially when RN's are DESPERATELY needed in/around my town. Is it just grades they base it on?

It is a combination of pre-requisite grades, the nursing aptitude test, and they also give points if you work in a qualifying health-related field. Hope that helps. Your school should be able to provide you with more info. also if you talk to an academic advisor.
youknowho 470 Posts Apr 5, 2005 Dont be irritated. Unless the school picks 100% by lottery then they have to have some way of ranking students and making selections. I would rather have a system in place where I know that my good grades pay off instead of getting lucky in a lottery. Just find out what they count and how many points each thing is worth...tests, interview, grades, experience, essay, etc. Good luck:)

Just this semester they have added the TEAS but basically said it matters *more* for those who are near the bottom of the list and need to have a leg up. They said last semester they didn't take A SOUL below a 3.33. Each school really is all different.

Apr 6, 2005 Nursing schools and even community colleges are "picky" because they have more applicants than student positions. This is partly due to the downward turn in the economy a few years ago making nursing more attractive and thus more applicants, as well as a shortage of instructors. This makes it more competetive to get in, hopefully graduating a better quality nurse. It's ironic with the need for nurses they can't get more students in. Good luck to you. I was lucky, there was a waiting list when I went to school, but it was first-come first serve. No competition. And there were no pre-reqs as long as you took Algerbra and Chemisry in highschool, you go fresh out of high school and start.
JNEB 13 Posts Apr 6, 2005 Thanks for all the help ladies! And Glimmer, yes, I'll be starting my Pre Req's in the fall. I have 3 years to get them finished. :)
land64shark 367 Posts Apr 6, 2005 My CC does a wait list thing. It's first come, first served. You can't apply until completion on A&P I and II with a grade of C or better. (No entrance test either.) Then you can expect a 2-3 year wait! This REALLY sucks! Good grades don't get you there any faster than average grades. :angryfire I'm going a different route. I'm taking A&P I currently and will take A&P II over the summer. I start LPN school at the tech school in August. Upon graduation and attainment of license, I'll go straight into the LPN to RN bridge program at the CC. (No wait list for that because of high drop out rates in the regular ASN program) I'll have most, if not all of my co-req's competed already. Gee, do you suppose there's a connection between high drop out rates and not having a competitive entrance standard? Hmmmm....
