How often do you have to work weekends at your hospital? Does seniority play a factor? If a nurse has a certain amount of tenure with your hospital, can they be excluded from working weekends?

Each unit in our hospital has a weekend requirement that fits their needs. On my peds unit we work every 3rd weekend. We were placed into groups based off of experience level. Each group has a Clinical supervisor for day and nights. These are also our holiday groups. So we rotate a holiday package every 3 years. Last year I did NYE, Memorial Day weekend and 4th of July. It works amazingly well for our unit. And you can count out your weekends for the whole year. Same requirement for everyone no matter seniority.

I can never remember what our weekend commitment is at our ER. I think one or two weekends a month? The reason for this is that I actually LIKE working weekends.....no administration....the team is generally really close knit and easy to work with and I never forget when I am supposed to be at work. Oh and the shift diff!

I’ve never worked anywhere where weekend commitment is based on seniority. Other aspects of scheduling yes but every unit I've worked on there’s usually an every other weekend requirement for all staff or occasionally every third. The only time I worked every weekend was when I was on the weekend program or when I’ve picked up extra time on the opposite weekend.

Everyone is required to work every other weekend regardless of seniority. No one can complain because we all are doing it.
