Working in the US ----- PLEASE READ FIRST

Steps that need to be taken if you need to apply for the green card.:

1. Apply to a state Board of Nursing for licensure by examination. Follow the requirements that are listed on the application. Some states will require a credentials verification, please be aware of that. Once your credentials have been accepted, they will send you a letter stating that you meet all requirements for licensure except the NCLEX-RN exam. Once you have received this letter, you can go ahead and pay the fee for the exam to Pearson-Vue. This can be done on their website: http://www.pearsonvue.com.

The charge for taking the exam in the US is $200 US, and for the overseas centers is $350 US. The overseas centers require that you phone them to schedule your appointment at this time. See the website listed for Pearson-Vue to obtain their phone numbers.

2. Finger print cards can be done at any police station unless otherwise stated by that particular Board of Nursing. If they are needed, I would have two sets completed.

3. Visa Screen Certificate is handled by CGFNS and can be downloaded from their website at http://www.CGFNS.org. This is required of all nurses who are applying for a green card on their own. If you are married to a nurse who will also be working, currently just one person needs the Certificate as the other will be on a spousal visa. However, this is subject to change.

4. English exams are required if you are not from an exempt country.

Approved exams are TOEFL, TWE, and TSE or the IELTS series with the academic branch and the speaking section.

5. Any forms that require a notary can be done at the U.S. Embassy where you are living. There is a fee for this. Last time that I checked, the charge was about $35 US per signature required.

6. For those of you wishing to go the New York route, they require a special credentials verification, called a CVS, also done thru CGFNS. They can use the same submitted documents for the Visa Screen Certificate. But you do not submit the documents and are unable to do so. CGFNS is required to obtain all needed documents for this, you just submit the applications and pay the fee and they do the rest.

Hope that this helps clear up many questions that keep popping up. :)

Stanford is an excellent facility but I do not recommend it for a new nurse coming over here. Many things are quite state of the art, and I suggest that you get your feet "wet" someplace else first.

Let me know when you pass NCLEX, and I will make some suggestions for you.

If you want my study materials, please send me your e-mail address in a pm and I will send them when I do my next mailing.:wink2:

hello there...after reading for several times many of the postings here, i figured i should write you to ask several questions. i have an agency in Pennsylvania and oh yes i have my nclex already.the problem is i wonder why is it taking abit long for my petition to be approved? my agency filed it last august yet, and i got my notice of receipt. that's it...til now my case has not been approved. How long does it usually take for one's case to be approved.I was filed in vermont service center.AFter the notice of receipt, what is the next for me to wait? i figured, i might need to submit new sets of NBI clearance and police clearance if my case will yet be approved by next year, right?

Welcome to Allnurses.com and the US.:balloons:

What type of visa are you currently on so that I can tell you what steps that you will need to go thru. The most important will be applying to the Lousiana Board of Nursing for licensure by examination. Once you have been accepted by them , then you will be permitted to write the NCLEX exam. This will be your first step.

Suzanne,

We are here on a family visa which was applied for by my brother-in-law.I am here with my husband and kids. Thanks for your urgent response to my previous message.

Dorothy.

Family visa still doesn't tell me anything. Are you permitted to work on the type of visa that you have, meaning that you have a green card, etc. If not, you will also need to go thru the Visa Screen process from CGFNS.

so frustrating to wait for greencard, how long can you predict I need to wait overseas?

Where are you from? Do you have all exams and the Visa Screen Certificate completed?

The wait is usually not that long, provided that everything is done and bills are paid on time. Also depends on where you will be working. California used to be the slowest, and right now they are the fastest. But that can change at any time.

Suzanne,

Two of my childrens green card just arrived yesterday and i suppose my own will be around very soon.I have my Social security # too.I would like to know what to expect in the Nclex exam if possible.

I discovered thet ophthalmic nursing is very rare here in America,I am not so sure but i don't just seem to find it.

I hope this helps. Thanks for your usual co-operation.

Dorothy.

It is quite common actually but more with free standing clinics. Most of our eye procedures here are actually done on an out-patient basis, they are not admitted unless it is something like a detached retina, etc.

What were your job responsibilities exactly, then I can try to steer you in the right direction.

hi,suzanne:

I am a RN in NY.I ahve a question about the regestration of RN license in NYS. I know that the NY board needs every RN registers their license every 3 years, and i searched all over the NY boarsd's website ,did not find any requirement about the regestration. Do you know the criteria of RN's regestration in NY? Do i need to take any special course or meet any requirement in my second regestration ? Since i have not worked in any hospital .

Thank you for your help!
