Working third-shift while attending school for nursing?

I just started working as a CNA third-shift. Financially, I have to work full-time as I am single, and I need health insurance. I thought working third-shift while trying to attend school would be easier to fit in classes, as opposed to working days or pm's. Can it be done? I have not started school yet, but are there any of you nurses out there that have done it and lived to tell? I'm dedicated and determined, and do not have any kids right now. I just live with my boyfriend and our dog. That's pretty much the whole reason I want to become an RN, so that I can get a better paying job so that we can actually somewhat afford kids. Right now with what I make as a CNA, there's no way we could afford our bills, plus daycare. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks! :)

Did you work days or nights? I am considering working days 2 12s and an 8. (Days) it would put me at every weekend. I eonder if 3rd would be better so I Can work 3 12s. Thurs Fri Sat but possibly never have a day off and also would have to stay up all day Sun to be able to sleep normal schedule for the school week.

I wouldn't recommend this at all. If still taking prerequisites then ok but in the nursing program you Need focus and working this way will not be good. As someone mentioned, there are many ways to afford quality insurance without being a full time employee: private company, state programs, through school. I refuse to work full time (only sat and sun second shift), and got a very relaxed job. No way will I be on my feet for 12 hours and go to work. I pick up extra when I am on break or have an easy week at school. Scale down spending and look for scholarships and small loan but please don't overdo it with work not worth it. Self care is important too during school.

Thanks for the response. Anyone else done this. I know there is but for some reason do not speak up. I know of a few who have. Not easy but anything worthwhile

That's how I feel. I got accepted to an accelerated BSN and I want to work part time because I have a good amount of money saved up and don't need full time. I have an excellent memory and usually once I hear or see something it sticks. I've always gotten through school barely studying lol and I graduated summa cum laude with my first degree.

So did you work days or nights

I know a lot of nursing students working as CNAs. I also know some nursing students who tried working full time and go to school full time and didn't make it through first semester. I'd consider part time so you don't screw up your transcript, at least until you're sure you'll be able to handle it.
