Working, schooling AND mothering?

I know some of you are doing it but I can't find a thread on it so here is my question...

Who out there is working full time, going to nursing school full time and mothering (not to mention being a wife) as well?

Our local hospital offers the type of program where you work part time (32 hours perweek) and they pay you full time while you are in school. We thought we had it all worked out to get through school without me working but as it turns out my kids was just have to do without too many things (including food most likely). I'd probably work a night shift when I don't have class or clinical the next day and then be off on school days. My kids are 9, 6 and 5 (all in school next fall when I start nursing school).

So WHO is doing it? I know it can be done. I just need the encouragement.

(I might add that I'm a 4.0 type of student who doesn't struggle academically so that isn't an issue and I have a very helpful husband as well ...lucky me)

KUDOS to those of you doing it now!

First I would say get used to not being a 4.0 student. I was too until I started Nursing School.

I didn't mean to sound as if I were suggesting I would maintain that 4.0.... (I'm more realistic than that) just that I don't struggle with learning so that isn't an added complication.

I am a senior in nursing school. I have worked full time the entire time I have been in nursing school. I also am married and have a seven year old son. I had a 4.0 G.P.A until I made my first B last semester! i still have over a 3.9 G.P.A. It can be done. I am living proof of that!! However, you have to really want it bad, and you must be a strong person to deal with the shear exhaustion of it all.

Try to read over what was covered after each class.(I used to be better at that in the beginning!) It is imperative that you truly have your family's support. I could not have done this without my husband and mother who stepped up and pretty much took over child care, household cleaning, most of the cooking and the clothes washing!! Try to start working on the projects and papers early, which I was also better at early on. When I first started working at the hospital, i was on a floor where I could do an awful lot of studying while at work. If you could get a job where you could do some studying, it would help, as well. It is mostly about determination, though. My second semester of school was by far the hardest. I went to school or clinical Monday-Friday, worked Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights (7p-7a), and returned to school on Monday morning after working all night, had class from 8am until 12pm, went to get my clinical assignment, got home about 3 or 4 pm., took a couple of hours nap, and got up and worked on my clinical paperwork!! I made it through with a 4.0 G.P.A. All of my instructors say it can't be done, however I have proven them wrong the entire time. It can be done no matter what anyone tells you, if you want it bad enough!

i am graduating next wednesday! And i have gone to school full time, worked full time, and have a 4 and 5 year old. You can do it, it is hard, and you will have to learn that you can't give it all 100%, sometimes a passing grade that is not a 4.0 will just have to do. Good Luck and remember that you can do anything that you set your mind to, but there are sacrifices for you and your family along the way.
