working prn for two different agencies...

Published

Does anyone work PRN for two different agencies? I currently work PRN for one agency that I absolutely love. We use home base home care and I find it so easy, the back up staff in the office is wonderful, I am never on call and I don't want to leave this job. However, it is usually slow. I haven't done an admission in almost 3 weeks. I do maybe 10 visits a week and would like to be doing twice that. I am thinking of working PRN for another agency and it seems manageable. I prefer PRN because my dad lives with me, has end stage COPD and needs daily assistance with some things so I try to make myself available. Does anyone work for more than one agency and have any advice to offer? Benefits is not an issue, I have 401K and medical through my hubby...

Many nurses who only do home health are signed on with more than one agency. I was with three to four agencies at a time at my previous location. I have been with six agencies where I live now, but only one of them bothers to give me any work. I no longer consider myself to be an employee of the other five agencies due to them never giving me work or the length of time since I got any work. When you are with more than two agencies, and they are actively giving you work, you have to have a system to keep yourself organized and in everyone's good graces.

I don't work multiple agencies but I interview/hire... many of our contingent staff work for several different companies and the response I get is that they want to work but to take on the patient load they want and the area that they want (not often a luxury with full and part timers). Some weeks you can be slammed and others very slow so the nurses tend to have a few companies they work for so they balance out. I have never had an issue hiring someone that works somewhere else as well as long as you can attend some meetings or at a minimum read meeting minutes : ) to keep up to date. Just let the companies know and get any on call/weekend/holiday obligations figured out up front!

thanks rnmich, it's nice to hear from someone from a hiring perspective! Your thoughts are appreciated!

My agency does not allow this.
