Working as a new grad in Portland & Relocating

Published

Was just looking for any insight on rental market in Portland and if it is indeed affordable on a RN salary? Not married/no children if that helps. Also, any familiarity with hospitals in the area offering relocation assistance? I heard on a previous thread that OHSU does, but was not sure how much they or the hospitals in the area offer.

Hi! Did you move to OR?

Yes and very happy I did

cool! How is the OHSU environment?

It’s pretty great. Definitely way better than previous hospitals back home in terms of culture, resources and pay/benefits. Highly recommend it if you can swing it

DM me if you have any specific questions

Hi! I just saw this as I have been researching moving to Portland. OHSU has been at the top of my list! I am graduating in May and wanted to ask how difficult you think it'd be to get a new grad job in Portland coming from another state (If I could get a job in OR id go ahead and get my license for Oregon). Thanks!

Hey, I cannot send you a direct message so I'm posting here. Did you decide to make the move to Portland? I graduate in December and will be moving to Portland also.

I did, lived there for ten months and PROMPTLY moved back to Virginia. The cost of living is INSANE and I guarantee you, based on a nurse's wages you will either have to spend a LARGE portion of your income on rent or live in the ghetto. I had other nurses who lived near me. Homeless people DESTROYED my car and stole the catalytic converter off of it. They also broke into it multiple times to inject heroin. The homeless situation is OUT OF THIS WORLD. And my job was full of snitches. Other floor nurses would literally COMB through my charting trying to find the SMALLEST mistake so they could report me to the unit manager. And the ***ing way people drive on the road there is STUPID!! If I had to do it all over again, I would have tried Colorado instead.
