Hi there,
My husband starts work for Calgary Police Service in April:). I will be joining him with our 3 boys as soon as possible after that date. I have temp reg with CARNA however the recruitment freeze seems to be never ending:crying2:. My temp reg only lasts 18 more months during which I have to start work in order to maintain my career. I am an experienced ITU Sister in the Uk. Is there any agency work or private health system available or does anyone have any wise words. AHS cannot keep this up forever....or can they?? Yours hopefully BG.

I think it will be difficult for you to find employment in ICU in Calgary in the current job market but maybe you will find work as a homecare nurse, try contacting Bayshore Home Health http://www.bayshore.ca/Bayshore-Home-Health-Locations-Calgary.aspx
good luck with your move to Canada

I'm not sure I'd recommend Bayshore or home health... a friend is working for them now and is NOT all that thrilled. And she has been a Canadian all her life. There will be some externally posted positions coming up, especially in Calgary, once the new minister of health gets his game on. Dr Duckie has indicated in one of his recent blogs that he has signed off on several postings that will be open to external applicants. It might be worth waiting for a couple of months and seeing what turns up.

Yup "casual" postings are starting to appear.
But we have to remember what the Duck gives he also snatches back.
Let's just hope that some nurses start taking the retirement packages. I know of four RN/LPNs with start dates back in the late 70s/early 80s still working full time and they could go at any time....
You only know 4? We have at least 8 on our unit that fit that demographic... but because of what we do, none of them would be considered for the VEP.
Jan, that's on one very small, specialized unit. Your PICU is way bigger than this unit. Then let's not forget the ones working casual who are already collecting pensions (another four).
True, we have 105 regular staff, not counting our managers, and another 30 or so casuals.
