Work during Nursing School???

Published

Hello all,

I am currently a BSN nursing student. I was wandering if I could work as a phlebotomist, or CNA during nursing school? I am willing to get certified in whatever is necessary, but I am not even sure if this is allowed? If anyone has any answers, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You.

Absolutely, it is allowed. I worked as a CNA during my pre-reqs and first year of nursing school. I then worked as a Nurse Tech during the last year of school. I only worked part-time (usually every weekend, as that is what fit my needs.) It sure was a great way to become comfortable in the health care setting. It also gave me a foot in the door when the RN position opened on my floor!

Good luck!;)

I worked full time, as a LPN, while getting my associates. I worked full time getting my BSN and my MS. It is hard but it is doable if you have to. And I did.

Absolutely! I would encourage it! To practice transfer skills and total patient care (if you work as an NAC) will make you so much stronger coming out of the Nursing program.

Best of luck!

Thats great news. I would love to do it part-time while in school and then definetly in the summers when i'm home, since its a BSN program. How would I go about doing this? I read somewhere that to be able to sit for the certification test of a CNA one needs to have taken a 75 hour course or something to that affect. How does it work if you are a nursing student? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

I would consider calling around in your community to see who is holding the classes, and to sign up for a class during semester break.

Good Luck

I'm currently working as a Nurse Extern at a hospital and I'm in my last year of nursing. It has helped me sooo much with school as far as feeling confident about going into a pt. room or just doing anything. I'm way more organized compared to before in my first year. Some places will hire you while your in school without a CNA license, but most require you to have at least your first year done since that's the equivilant to CNA school...But it depends on the hospital. Mine would hire you after your first year was complete but it probably differs. between everyone. Just call around to the HR dept. of a few local hositals or check at your school to see if they have any postings for Intern/Extern positions.
