Wishing to finish my prerequisites online

Published

Good evening,

I have read articles and questions from this site for awhile now, and finally decided to join. Anyway, the reason I am posting this is because I got a question, well more than one.

In late 2016/early 2017 I took some prerequisites at my local community college. I took Human Anatomy and Physiology 1, Human growth and development, and speech, along with other "catch-up" classes in English and Math in order for me to take the correct ENG and MTH classes that actually counts.

My question is I wish to finish Human Anatomy and Physiology 2 and General Microbiology online, what do you recommend? Yes, I have heard how difficult and stressful these classes are to do online. The college I am returning to doesn't offer these online and I was told that they will need to be regionally accredited in order for me to transfer the credits to their school. If it helps I was entertaining the idea of doing the accelerated programs at University of Phoenix. Yes I am aware that the courses through them will take me through the shredder due to the courses already being hard taking during a normal semester at your local community college. I am just wondering if there is a less accelerated program other than Phoenix. If it helps my local school is Coastal Alabama community college.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, on my phone at the moment, so hope the grammar issues are minimal.

I've never come across an accredited online A&P course and wouldn't recommend it anyway. Even if you excel academically, I just think A&P is one of those classes where it's important to get the full hands-on experience. How would you complete the lab portion in an online class? A strong foundation in A&P is critical if you want to be prepared for, and do well, in nursing school. Plus, it's knowledge you will use throughout your career.

There are community colleges across the country that offer microbiology online, but be prepared to buy a lab kit and a microscope, unless you somehow have access to a microscope through a friend or your local college. Also, make sure the nursing schools you are applying to will accept credits from an online micro class.

I agree w/ oops I bradyed again...she is 100% correct!

Especially the part of checking w/ the schools you plan to apply to if an online science class will be okay.

I saw in another thread on this site about somebody paying roughly $1000.00 to take an online microbiology class and that wasn't even the cost of the class. That was separate. The 1K was for the lab kit which included a microscope and all the stuff you needed for experiments.

I would strongly suggest making the time to take your science classes in person. There is a lot of information that you need explanations on or else you'll be lost when it comes to nursing school.

Perhaps I need to look into going to my local collage after I leave work. I work 12 hour shifts, which are rotated to every other weekend, so I can actually go when I leave in the mornings at 7 and be there by 8. My local has some courses that start at 8am until 9 or 10 am that are more than once a week and some that are 8am until noon or one which is once a week.

Will have to figure daycare out for my child of course

I recommend taking them at Bartonline. They are fully accredited. You can also take them at PortageLearning. The good thing about PortageLearning is that it is self-paced. I hope it helps.

I think in person is the best for the core science classes. When I took Microbiology, it really went back and touched on concepts I learned in Anatomy, but went into more details. There is no way I would've known about these details, let alone understand them if I took either Anatomy or Microbiology online. Micro can get into some very detailed DNA/RNA/Reverse transcriptase functions that will leave your head spinning. When we got to that part of the lecture, I read the chapters twice, went through them many times and still had a difficult time.

I understand your days seem packed w/ work and kids. Are you able to perhaps do half-days at work to accommodate a class? I had one lady that did this while she worked as a Medical Assistant. Her work gave her permission to do this while she attended the course. The science courses I have taken have been semester long, 2 days a week for about 4.5 hours each day (lab and lecture combined).

I just want to stress, again, if you do decide to do online, just verify with the college you want to apply to if they will accept it. I've encountered a few colleges who have straight up said "no" to online science classes. The other ones like Sociology, Psychology, they don't care whether online or in-person.

Good luck!

Maybe see if there is a hybrid course? It's part online, part in person, so you generally meet once a week for the "lab" hours. We usually just did a lecture in mine with maybe a short dissection at the end. That way, you don't have to deal with having to do an online lab and having to pay $$ for those lab kits.

As of the fall 2018 semester, my school will no longer accept credits from any online micro or A&P courses, so you may want to check with the school you're wanting to go to if they will even accept them. I also wouldn't recommend taking any online science courses.

I'm going to check with my schools hybrid courses and see also if I can go there after work and still get sleep before I got to go in again on those nights. I heard that you loose sleep and it's stressful during the actual nursing program compared to the prerequisites
