Will working as an SLPA help me in my nursing application?

Published

Hi all,

Long time lurker here finally making my first post!

Long story short, I'm about to graduate (spring 2019) with a BA in Communication Sciences and Disorders. I was previously pre-nursing but switched majors when I transferred universities, though I have all the prerequisites done and am now looking into my options to pursue nursing. The main option I'm looking at is pursuing a second bachelors degree in nursing, which quite a few universities offer here in California. My plan is to use the year after I graduate to retake some classes, take the TEAS again (the score I have is from version 5) and gain work experience that will help strengthen my nursing application.

A couple of things here:

1) I'm planning to retake a prereq or two just to improve my science GPA, which is currently at a 3.0. The last prereq I took was almost 2 years ago before I transferred to my current school, so I plan to retake a couple at my local community college.

2) My BA will allow me to work as a Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant in California. I could work in a school, clinical, or possibly hospital setting (e.g. VA hospital).

What I want to know is if this year of work as an SLPA would help me in my application, seeing as it is health-related though it's not necessarily hands-on.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

Credit for work experience will vary greatly from program to program. In my ADN program, it would have made no difference, at all. Check with the specific school(s) you're interested in to see how the calculate eligibility.
