I'm curious about this because my friend told me (her mother is a nurse). She said that NY will soon require LPN's to get their RN licenses, and do away with LPN programs altogether. Could this be true? I was going to do the LPN program, but I didn't after she told me that.
This happened in the UK around 6 -7 years ago. We had RN's & Enrolled Nurses (LPN).The EN's were being phased out & being given additional training to achieve their RN.
With the health care system in the UK - training was paid for..... in the US; I'm not sure how that'll fly....
When I started my RN training in 1989 the last of the Pupil Nures (ENs) where just completing their training. There are still ENs employed - in very small numbers as the majority of them completed the conversion courses during the 1980s & 1990s. For those that didn't want to do the conversion courses on offer, as far as I know they were kept on in their jobs and replace with RNs when they moved on - unless someone knows different?
Can you still sit for the LPN Boards after a certain number of credits in nursing have been acquired? I was able to do that (Waaay back in 93) and I did it for 2 reasons : the first was to see what taking a state nursing exam would feel like and secondly as a fall back license in case I blew the RN boards the first time!! Check it out and let meknow!

No NY stopped it in 2005. You can't sit for the LPN or become a CNA without the appropriate programs now.
I don't know about the LPN which is why I was asking but you can sit for the CNA written and clinical as a graduate nurse as long as you submit your diploma and take the exam within 2 yrs of submitting the application. If your nursing school doesn't have a nurse aide training program code you justhave to contact NYSDOH at [email protected] first that's all. It is Route 3 out of the 7 different ways to become a CNA in NYS.
That's why I asked about the LPN. If they do it for CNA maybe there is a way thru NYSDOH to sit for the exam even if you are in a nursing school without an LPN program. You never know!
