I've been in med/surg for 2.5 years. I am ready to move to a new specialty area, but how will this effect my pay scale? Will I have to start at the bottom again? What is the most common practice in this situation?

As far as I know, you're generally credited for your past RN experience, even in a new specialty.

Same facility? your pay should go with you if not up.

I would think your pay would either stay the same but would most likely go up. Your med/surge experience does count for something. Good luck : )

If you are staying in the same system, it should be a lateral transfer, certainly no loss of pay. Good luck, it is difficult to to start over in a new specialty but learning new things is always a great experience.

It should stay the same, however, some positions such as working in a clinic may not consider that a lateral move and you may take a cut in pay. Just check into it before you take another position and if it's similiar to med-surg you shouldn't see any difference.
