Hi everyone! I am not quite a nurse but I have on more semester to go then I will have my A.S. The problem is I really dont like nursing. People have always told me that I should be a nurse, I really like to help people and Im always the one bringing the chicken soup or baking cookies for a sick friend. But really since I started school I dont think I have much interest in what it means to be a REAL nurse. I dont mind blood but I cant catheterize someone and I am very disgusted at clinicals. One patient at clinicals had a trach and was coughing up bloody sputum. I know it was bad but I had to leave the room! I have no real interest in science or math and hate anatomy and physiology. Hospitals smells really gross me out! Anyways I was thinking I could be a psych nurse because my LPN friend told me all they really do is pass meds and take vital signs. I think I can do that. But I still hate med surg, OB maternity, and peds nursing. Will nursing grow on me over time when Im actually working as a real RN? Please dont tell me to do something else I invested too much money and time and I only have 4 months left to quit now. Plus down here in Miami RNs are the only people who have jobs
get your bsn and become a community health nurse, school nurse, nurse educator, etc.. lots of places in nursing with minimal yuck factor, but most would like you to have some kind of staff nursing experience first.
there is a cool program called nurse family partnership where nurses visit homes of first time mothers throughout their pregnancy until the kid is 2 years old and does teaching and supports the mother.. if you have a caring personality, this sounds like it could be a good fit. i really liked it, but i kinda like the yucky gross stuff and using my technical skills so i dont think i would like to go into it right after school..
i talked to one of their nurses and she said they prefer BSNs and at least a year of experience in peds or mother baby, but they do sometimes hire new grads.

check it out.
The great thing about nursing degrees is that you can do so much more than just clinical nursing! There is a range of areas from hands on to administration, teaching, sales and marketing, informatics, research, etc. even consulting to various other professions! The other things is, since you put your time and energy into this degree, you will have a degree to build on if you decide to get all the way out of healthcare. I think a nursing degree is one of the best degrees one can possess...you always have it to fall back on, can get a job in almost any state in a short period of time, and it gives you the flexibility to explore numerous applications. AND (I think someone else mentioned this) nursing school is pretty much nothing like the real world of nursing. Good luck to you!
