Will be new to inpatient rehab

Published

I have been working as a psychiatric RN for three years in October. I will be transferring to an inpatient rehab around the end of September. From my understanding, most patients are those recovering from falls, stroke, etc. It has a 1:7 nurse patient ratio with one to two techs. The patients have to meet at least 3 hours of physical therapy. They do have dialysis patients, tube feedings, blood transfusions and of course wound care. I'm a bit nervous because I haven't done hardly any med surg since nursing school, but I have retained a lot of it and I will have a month of orientation. I will be working day shift. I am very excited about this opportunity to get some med surg experience and work somewhere outside of primarily psychiatric care, I just wanted to say hello to all the rehab nurses out there!

Holler!

All silliness aside, acute inpatient rehab is backbreaking work and rewarding at the same time. There's something awesome about seeing a bedbound patient roll onto the unit while laying in a stretcher last month, then seeing him progress to the point that he can walk to the elevators at discharge this month.

I am really excited. It sounds like a unit I want to be a part of. I am looking forward to more learning and one on one interactions with my patients!

I just wanted to say, I love working rehab. It has been a great experience overall and I am learning a lot. Also, to see the changes in patients, not being able to walk to the bathroom to walking the entire unit hallway is an amazing experience. Plus, the change in schedule in comparison to my previous unit is highly appealing for when I start school.

It's nice to hear you're liking rehab nursing. Thanks for the update!

I'm glad to hear you are loving Rehab nursing! I'm also interested in that area. What state do you live in?

A cursory glance at her profile indicates she is in Georgia.

TheCommuter, BSN, RN Senior Moderator Thank you!

Do you mind if I ask where you are working? I'm in rehab nursing in Georgia as well, working at the Shepherd Center :).

Glad to read your update. I've just started on an inpatient rehab unit and am nervous as it's my first job since becoming licensed but excited as well and looking forward to learning.
