For all of you experienced NICU nurses. I am wondering if being a bit older and having children (5 to be exact) will hinder me from getting a job in a NICU.

It shouldn't. In fact, life experience is often needed in nursing. As long as you have your child care taken of, no problems and good luck.
Actually, they will all be in school and my husband has a great job with wonderful flexibility. I am also very interested in working the night shift. I am a bit of a night owl!!
Not a problem then...you have your bases covered. Good luck in school!

In my experience, your age will not be an issue.
Your children should not come up in the interview at all. It is inappropriate for the interviewer to ask questions about your marital status and family. If you bring these topics up, then they become fair game. A job interview is a chance to discuss your professional interests and qualifications, not your family. So don't mention then, and there won't be an issue.

I hope not, or else you have a really good lawsuit on your hands! Good luck! :wink2:

I am in my 40's just graduated from Nursing School, single and have three living children. Two of my children were in NICU. I just started a job in a large level 3 NICU. So I think the life experience that you have will help with getting a job in NICU. For this internship four nurses were hired all new grads two of us in our fourtys and the other two in their twentys. Good Luck.

Not a problem :). There are lots of nurses with several children in my unit, no big. And our new nurses range from young twenties to mid-fifties. Actually, the older nurses tend to stay on the unit longer; they don't quit to stay home with their babies or because their husband is going to graduate school in another state . BTW, those are fine reasons to quit--just not reasons that are as common in older nurses.
