Will I struggle in nursing school if I never like math?

Published

I love helping people and learning about the human body. I have an Associates degree in Health Information Technology in which I had to study Anatomy and Physiology, Pharmacology, Medical Terminology and Coding which all was interesting to me. I however hate math. I did fine in college and graduated with a 3.6 GPA but got a C in my statistics class. Will all the math and calculation dosage classes drive me crazy if I am not a numbers person? Being a nurse has been my dream for years and I now have the time to devote to school. Just looking for some insight.

I'm terrible at math. I got a C in remedial algebra... A college class, I had to take because I failed the placement test to be put in college level math.

The math in nursing school has never presented a problem for me, we have 2 math questions on every test and I think of them as "gimme points"

Seriously, nursing math isn't difficult...

Reading everyone's responses have made me feel so much better and relieved. I had the same worries, but I'm relieved to know that nursing math is doable :)

Along with the basic ability to set up an equation at the 8th-grade level, your major need will be the ability to read a word problem and determine what you're being asked. There are many threads on the student fora on drug and IV calculations. I suggest that you take the afternoon and read them all, because each will give you insight into how to think about the kinds of problems you will be asked to master.

It's really not rocket science. Critical thinking, as in, "What are they really asking for here?" will carry the day.

Thanks everyone! I definitely feel more comfortable knowing that I don't have to be a math wiz to make it in nursing school. I am going to brush up on my math skills before testing and applying and hopefully I will be fine!
