Will I have any life during LPN School Please Advise

Published

Hello All, I would appreciate any advise. I am hoping to go to LPN school in the fall of 2007. I have a 3 year old now but by then he will be in kindergarden. Right now I work part-time so I am with him quite a bit. As bad as I would like to be a nurse the thought of putting him on the back burner really is heart breaking for me. I keep reading how there is four hours of homework a night and how demanding it is. Will I get to spend some time with my son during school. I would love to hear from you.

I had a ton of stress when I was in LPN school, you can do it!! and still have a bit of a life too. My suggestions

1. don't work too much, it's great experience that will solidify what you're learning at school, but more will tire you out, make you feel guilty for not spending time with your son, etc., etc. You have your whole life to work when you get done.

2. go to school part time if you have to. take the classes that are available while he's in school so you're both gone at the same time.

3. any free time at school between classes, study! the material is still fresh in your mind and you have the time. I saw way too many students waste their free time at school sitting around b--tchiing about the instructors when they could have been doing something productive.

4. if you have time to cook a meal, double the portions and freeze half. then you'll have some healthy food stockpiled for your busy nights.

5. hey, you've got a kid to practice on!! head to toes, developmental papers, etc.!!! my sons got a kick out of helping me.

You can do it!!!!!

i was 18 when i got accepted in to the lpn program. i was 19 when i graduated. never once did i spend 4 hours in one night doing home work. in fact i only studyed on test day 1 hour before the test. i graduated with a 3.07 gpa. some other people who were in my class would study for hours. my thing is you either know it or don't. you will never know whats on the test. i did better on tests than the ones who studied for hours.

how do you know anything without studying? how did you gain the knowledge needed to pass with just 1 hour of study before tests. i currently have a 3.9 gpa and have always "breezed" through other classes.

however, my "breezing" days are over in lpn school. i've had to study harder than i ever have in my life to understand and retain nursing knowledge and principles. if you have a secret, please let me know it. seriously!!

I've got three kids under the age of five and I'm doing well in the LPN programme. It's not easy but you can do it. We've got a lot of folks in our class who have kids and they are doing ok. The ones who didn't make it are the ones who were used to a wild party life prior to entering the programme and could not put that aside for the time they were in school. They would come to class on Monday talking about the weekend: how much they drank, which clubs they went to, how many old boyfiends they saw, which one they ended up with, what hit the fan when the current boyfriend found out, etc, etc. Honestly, none of them made it past second quarter. I'm not condemning the party life but from what I've seen in our school (which has a reputation for being rather tough), one really has to put it on hold and save it for the breaks. Just my observation. Hope it helps.

I'm on the same boat as you! But my son is a little younger. My son is 14 months old. I am doing my pre-reqs and co-reqs to get into the LPN program. I'm also doing my pre-reqs and co-reqs to get into the RN program and i'm going to apply for both and see which one I get into. My "plan" is that I get into the LPN program FALL06. HOPEFULLY! **crossing my fingers". The reason i'm doing my pre and co- reqs is so that i have it ALL done and I have less work to do in the program.

I know you can do it!

I am in my 3rd month as an LVN student and our program is extremely difficult. We are taking close to 25 semester hours in one semester and learning an extremely large amount of information. We have 35 in the class and 15 are failing either Health Science or MedSurg. I have no life, I study, sleep and go to class.
