  1. exactly. I did about that in my LVN program as well. I spent at least a week in each of the specialties in the hospital and countless hours on the Med/Surg or Telemetry floor.
  2. mystical, I know you can do it. I graduated from LVN school 2 weeks ago and I never thought I'd get there. This past year was the most hellacious and wonderful year of my life and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Sometime soon, you're going to have one of those "lightbulb" moments when something you're studying is going to click. When that happens, you'll know you're doing the right thing. Good luck to you and I promise it will get better.
  3. Good luck to all of you guys going to WCJC. Not but 2 weeks ago, I graduated from the LVN program in Richmond. It's gonna be a tough ride, but I have faith in you all! Good luck!
  4. I just graduated from the LVN program at WCJC at the Richmond location. WCJC has a great LVN program and they teach you everything you need to know about LVN nursing. Many people think that just because it's a LVN program it's gotta be easy. It's not. The class load is pretty tough and doing it while in clinical can be really really stressful. In the first semester, we took 24 semester hours and did 3 days a week of 8 hour shifts at Oak Bend Med Center (aka Polly Ryon). lol I have cried more this year than any other time in my 30 years of life. But I tell you what...walking across that stage and accepting my diploma was the most rewarding day of my life and I would go through the whole process again if I had to. Everything I gave up over the last year was worth what I have now.
  5. I love my LVN program and I am learning so much from it. I feel like I am really learning how to be the patient's advocate doing it this way. Eventually I'll get my RN but I'm not even thinking about that right now...I'm just trying to get through this!
  6. I am not working through school. I was told by our director that it was not a wise decision. Anyone in our class who was working is now in school full time. We have class two days a week from 8-3:30 and clinicals the rest of the days from 6:30 - 2, with post clinical from 2-3. I'm 29 and got the maximum I could through student loans through my junior college. It's hard, I have no life, I'm gaining weight and my best friend is a Foundations of Nursing book. But it is worth every moment!!
  7. hi there, congrats on getting in! I'm in my 6th month of LVN school and I got a palm for christmas. Though I prefer having my Tabers and Davis hardcopies with me, I have found that my palm got me out of some sticky situations. There are places online that you can d/l Tabers and Davis onto your Palm but you'll have to pay about 150 bucks for it. If you use other resources, i'm sure they have downloadable programs. good luck to you!
  8. congratulations for deciding to go back! age is definately not a factor, it's the love and the will to take care of the patient you have to have.
  9. the Nurse's Pocket Guide is a great book, i recommend that one too. We're getting right into the thick of things with our care plans and I use that book as well as my Foundations of Nursing book more than any others.
  10. hang in there tasha! I'm in my 6th month of LVN school and the first couple of months were pretty tough. We lost a lot of students and had killer Med/Surg tests that we thought we wouldn't make it through. Once you get on the floor, everything will start making sense! Good luck!
  11. hmm i didn't even think of that. thank you so much for your advice!
  12. I am in my 3rd month as an LVN student and our program is extremely difficult. We are taking close to 25 semester hours in one semester and learning an extremely large amount of information. We have 35 in the class and 15 are failing either Health Science or MedSurg. I have no life, I study, sleep and go to class.
  13. I'm a new member here, I just recently started LVN school here in Texas. I came to the forums to see what kind of wonderful advice I could get from fellow LVN/RN's on how to make my year go a bit easier. I've been here 5 minutes and I have already been offended beyond words. It pains me that I have to read about how horrible LVNs are on the floor, how they jack around or how they don't do their jobs. Of course there are going to be those out there, I understand that. But I REFUSE to be looked down upon simply because I don't have the time or money to go to school for 2 additional years. Critical care is where I want to go. Unfortunately most of the larger CC units in the Texas Medical Center are "wanting" to phase out LVNs. Who knows if it will happen, I don't know. I understand that LVNs can't do certain things. I know that we have to be monitored by a RN. That's fine with me. But when you go throwing your weight around by stereotyping all LVNs, subliminally saying that we aren't as good as RNs, that is going too far. The number one job of the nurse is to be the patient's advocate. Take care of the patient, do anything in your power to protect them. It sounds like the majority of those criticizing are more concerned with their power trip than taking care of the patient. I wont be coming back here, I already have too much to worry about rather than to listen to ignorance. I may not be an RN, but once I get my LVN degree, I will be proud as hell.
  14. :) It's nice to know there are other schools out there like mine. My school, right outside of Houston, is pretty strict. For us to pass each semester we have to take a math test and make a 100 on it. We can have all A's in everything from Foundations to MedSurg, but if we don't get a perfect score on Med Administration, we're doomed. We have 3 chances to make the perfect score. Last year it was an 85, this year it is 100. As much as this freaks me out, I do think it is fair...simply because you don't wanna be 95% right on giving a child a narcotic, it should be 100%.
  15. Hello aspiring! I am an LVN student and I went through the federal program for financial aid (FAFSA). They are helping me out with school, well as much as they can. It pays for my books and tuition. Try it out, I hope you find something!
