A lot of medical terms are similar to other terms, so yes, it very well may cause an issue. Have a friend or family member you trust go over your papers before you turn them in. At a college level course it may be hard to take someone seriously if they are not able to spell and use proper grammar. As a terrible speller I can attest. I have awful grammar to and it hurts my grades.

what did u do when it came to the med term

One of my main issues is spelling when it comes to documenting. Usually I just hurry through when we have a lab return and document leading to my grammatical mistakes. I've learned to slow down and re-read everything I write. Documenting is important and correct spelling is as well.

I am saddened by the fact our public school system is failing so many students by not adequately helping students with these types of problems. One of the biggest contributors is the lack of language classes. Learning a 2nd language really improves all skills in the primary language. I was fortunate enough to have French in grade school, and 4 years of Latin in high school--the best investment in education I ever made, because 90% of abstract vocabulary, and most of grammar in English are taken directly from Latin. I agree with the other posters to slow down and proofread your work. Be especially careful about abbreviations, drug names, and other medical terminology. While I input this on my iPad, I find that the autocomplete actually impedes accurate spelling, and that's another issue we will have to deal with as electronic records become more prevalent.

This is so very true, growing up teachers would never correct my spelling problems. I also never took my spelling seriously. Now I am 22 and suffer from very bad spelling, when trying to get help most people think because I cant spell i must have a reading problem. thats so for from the truth its rediculosly.

in college i have a 3.5 in my science classes. this proves i can do the work, orgo anp and bio chem are not for the week minded. i passed these classes because they did not focus on my bad spelling..

I don't know what i should do.

Medical terminology is a whole new world....for me i just got the hang of it....I type up my lectures and then hand write them then make note cards so I'm actually writing them three times.

Most of our assessments are Pre-formatted and we just fill in the blanks. We've had quite a few case studies and few papers requiring apa format. All of our test are multiple choice. My mistakes would be documenting in a lab return(skill performed for an instructor which is pass or fail) I've never failed d/t spelling, just told I spelled it wrong. My instructors get that there are some words that are hard to spell correctly. But basic spelling is needed - simply because of you can't write appropriately - it will be hard to document. Importance of documenting is stressed especially for legal purposes.

Yes im learning to take my time and reread over what I type. I will also keep my dictionary with me at all time when im in school. I dont want to fail out because of my spelling, but thats my biggest fear. I will do my best. Im thinking med term may be my hardest class

It may take awhile but looking at them, sounding them out, and then making flash cards will help. The more you practice the better you will e and the more confident you will be in yourself as well :) good luck
