Subacute is very similar to working in a nursing home, the other students are right. Subacutes have long term patients some of who are on ventilators or IVs. If you are looking for ICU or ER work make sure you work at a hospital that is promising to give you a very good orientation and preceptorship. A six-month training period in ICU is standard along with your basic hospital new grad orientation. Hello! I am new to these forums and will also be a new RN as of May 2006, if I pass the NCLEX. I am trying to decide which area/unit woud be good for new grads. I spend my summer internship in the ICU, but the nurses there told me that they did not want new, unexperienced nurses on the floor. The experience left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. However, I did end up applying for the ICU, Subacute, and ER. I have an upcoming interview with the nurse manager of the Subacute care unit, but other students are telling me that it would be like working in a nursing home. Any pointers?
Thanks!!
