Thanks everyone for all of the good advice. I guess there will always be some fear of the unkown, but I am excited about the opportunities to learn and grow that I will have on Med/Surg. I have a tendency to expect perfection from myself and to be too hard on myself. It will be difficult to just let go and take every day in stride, but I believe that I can make it. Hello! I will be graduating from nursing school in May 2006. They have a tuition reimbursment program in which you work for the hospital for X# of years and they will pay off your nursing school loan. I have already been hired on the med/surg unit, but I've never had a clinical there yet. I'm not sure of what to expect and am very nervous about the responsibility. I have read several threads in which med/surg nurses are stressed out and unhappy. Does anyone have any advice on this unit for a first year nurse/new grad? Thanks!

I am becoming increasingly 'freaked out' by all of the choices and not knowing which unit would be best to start out in. I am interviewing with the nurse manager in Subacute, but other students told me that was a bad floor because it is like a nursing home. I love to get to know my patients and there is such a variety there. Yet, I have been told to start on an ortho/neuro or med/surg floor. So far, a good majority of my class is applying to those floors and I feel at a loss. I am terrified that I'll end up on a floor were I won't be happy. ps. I worked my 10 week internship this past summer in ICU. Not sure that it's for me.

Hello! I am new to these forums and will also be a new RN as of May 2006, if I pass the NCLEX. I am trying to decide which area/unit woud be good for new grads. I spend my summer internship in the ICU, but the nurses there told me that they did not want new, unexperienced nurses on the floor. The experience left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. However, I did end up applying for the ICU, Subacute, and ER. I have an upcoming interview with the nurse manager of the Subacute care unit, but other students are telling me that it would be like working in a nursing home. Any pointers? Thanks!!
