Will my Epilepsy affect my career?

Hey all,

I have Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy and I usually have seizures when I'm sleep deprived (only had 2 in my life). I will be going to college next year as a Nursing Student and Im really worried about my sleeping habits as a Nurse. I heard you have to work at unholy hours and that your sleep cycles are basically wrecked.

I have a very mild case which is controlled with medication and I have been seizure free for 5 years:wink2: but I'm scared that these hours may affect me.

I really want to be a nurse and I dont want this adversity to affect me in any way shape or form.

Will most hospitals be understanding or will the demand for nurses everywhere mean that I wont be sleeping at all?

What are some typical work hours?

Thanks alot. :)

Personally I would make certain that I found employment that would allow me an acceptable schedule. The best source for advice on this concern would be your personal physician.

Having a seizure disorder did not affect my career in the least. Nicely controlled on carbamazepine. Has not slowed me down anywhere else either.

It sounds like your epilepsy is very nice controlled!! I think that you might want to choose a job that supports that continued control I think you can find positons that will work both in the hospital setting and out. good luck!
