anyone out there recently go through the wia program in broward county to get into lpn school?
i'm in the process of doing so and wanted to know your experience.
anything i should be aware of, like what costs they do and don't cover, etc.????
No benefits? yikes!
Well, I chose it because I've always had an interest in it, but never really pursued it. Secondly, I chose it because as far as stability, growth and opportunity, it comes in first place. Besides, I figured that I can always do it anywhere. Not that I plan on moving, but hey, you never know.
Wait until you get the books! I almost passed out when she stacked all of them on the counter. 7 or 8 books. HUGE books. I kept thinking how in the hell am I going to get these to the parking lot! LOL
yup, no benefits--thats another whole story. im grateful for my boyfriend. hes been very supportive----in every sense of the word. he's my rock!
thats also one of the reasons why i chose this path. many say its recession proof. but i guess we will both find out when we are done with school (keeping fingers crossed 4 a great outcome).
i found a few posts on this site that gives you links to online free medical terminology courses. im thinking of doing it. it wont hurt, right?
i know its definitely going to be overwhelming when i get those huge books. im only 5 feet tall, so im wondering how im going to carry it all. ive read some people even use suitcases---the ones with wheels on it. guess that will give me the workout im so desperately needing. lol.
I heard the same thing about the "backpacks on wheels". I heard you can get them at the bookstore. I'm going to get one. I don't want to kill myself carrying books. lol
I also heard of the online terminology exercises and yes, I'm going to them as well. I also need to brush up on my fractions. They scared me in 7th grade and they still freak me out.
I hope this recession is over soon. It's slightly demotivating to think that even nurses are affected. But, as with anything, you don't know until you try and at least it's something we'll have forever. I figure it's the first door to open to many more choices you have later. Can you tell I have nothing to do but think of "deep" thoughts? lol
What's really sad is I'm watching TOO much Judge Judy. Although I've been enjoying Dr. Oz :)
Reading through the books is quite cool, at least for now. I'm sure I'll be sick of them in a few months!
I hope you get your letter soon!!
i guess ill look into getting the backpack on wheels too, but im hoping we dont have to carry all of those books on a daily basis. i heard a PDA is a great investment and am hoping i get it as an early birthday gift. :)
yeah, i hope this recession's over or close to it, by the time we finish school. i try to keep positive to whats ahead. its been an extremely rough year for me.
theres nothing wrong with "deep thoughts", lol. i can totally relate. there are nights where i cant even sleep because my brain is constantly thinking of anything and everything. but ive been getting better.
i watch tv, but basically just record all of my fav shows and watch them while my bfri is at work----hes not really into greys anatomy, med shows and the girly shows i watch. but what ive been doing ALOT of is redecorating (though its his house). it keeps me busy and i just love being creative. and in the end, the house will look even better (ive got an addiction to HGTV--LOL).
soon enough, the cabin fever will be gone and all of my time will be spent on school and books. to some that may sound bad, but im excited, nervous and anxious all at the same time. i love learning new things and reading books and things of that sort (yeah, thats the inner nerd in me talking).
ok, so now im rambling.....
gonna go check my mail @ my condo to see if my letter arrived (keeping my fingers crossed).
I hope your letter comes today!!!
What have you heard about the PDA? I have a G1 from T-Mobile already but curious as to why a PDA would be helpful. Applications?
Anyway, I think I'm going get the backpack and the watch they have at school. I guess the watch has a second hand and I think I heard it does military time. I'll have to check it out.
I LOVE HGTV!!!:redbeathe I'm fascinated with it. I can't match anything, but I love the crazy things they do sometimes, especially the outdoor kitchens and pools.
I think I'm pretty set for school. I have to get the 2nd dose of my MMR immunization, my uniform and some pens/paper and the backpack/watch. I hope I'm not forgetting something stupid. lol
So the next time you write, I hope it starts with "I got my letter!!!" :)
no letter today! they did say the end of the month, but i didnt think they would wait until the LAST DAY OF THE MONTH! AAAGGGHHH!!!!!
i heard that PDAs are great while youre in school. theres a few websites where you can download books n stuff. this way you are not always carrying them around----a much lighter load in the suitcase. check out some of the posts on this website. thats where i got some insight on it.
i obviously havent gotten anything yet for school. still gotta wait for EVERYTHING! UGH! its so frustrating. i dont like things being done last minute, and i like to plan everything out-----im totally anal like that...i cant live without my "things to do" list!
HGTV is awesome! im currently working on the spare bedroom and turning it into my studying sanctuary. i promised myself i would have it done by the time i start school.
the only shot i have left is my 3rd dose of Hep B and thats in January---then of course the titer afterwards. glad im done with that--- i hate needles---but sure i wont have a problem giving someone else that poke!
.. Ugh, I know how frustrating it is. Sorry you didn't get it. There's always tomorrow. Think positive!
Thanks for the info on the PDA stuff. I'll have to check that out.
I hate waiting until the last minute as well. Drives me nuts. Although I do procrastinate on some things, other things I wanted planned and finished well in advance.
I am really optimistic about the job opportunities for us when we graduate. I read other articles and stuff (other than on here) and they still point to this having more growth than just about any other career. It'll work out and it's the right thing to be doing. (That's what I keep telling myself)
Now you have me curious about the books on PDA. I am off to check it out.
****tomorrow the letter will arrive****
wow, youre good.
guess what i got today???? yup, my acceptance letter!
maybe i should also check with you next time i play the lottery. LOL.
i feel a little bit better, but not 100% yet.
tomorrow im going to sheridan and picking up the form i need to take to WIA for my core voucher.
my appt with WIA is on 10/13 and registration for school runs from 10/6-10/15. im worried i wont be able to get everything done (they say its first come first serve with registration too). i would hate to lose my seat because of WIA's paperwork and stuff not being processed in time.
i still have the wia application here with me at home. i was told by them to hold on to it and bring it with me when we meet on the 13th.
how long did it take for them to process your paperwork? and what was the process like? does it sound anything like what im going thru? i mean, do they even give you a voucher before your application is "approved" with wia??
i know, here i go again with all the WIA questions........i feel im so close, but yet so far......
so, did you find anything interesting on PDAs? what are your thoughts?
im optimistic as well about jobs for us when we graduate. im already thinking of continuing my education and i didnt even start school yet (yeah, its my inner nerd talking again). i think i wanna get into labor & delivery. but from the posts ive read so far, alot say that its still too early to tell what you may really want to get into.
I e-mailed Central Florida WIA on Friday and still haven't received a response back. I wanted to know if I could get the job search requirement waived, seeing as I will be attending a full-time LPN program. If they haven't emailed me back tomorrow I'm going to give them a phone call and hopefully be able to set up some sort of appointment.
It doesn't help that my school (Orlando Tech) doesn't really give a specific date that tuition is due. I'm guessing sometime in December. The financial aid lady didn't even seem to know specifics! But I need to know NOW so I can get my fin. aid situated. Argh.

KEWL! glad you have no more worries!!!! guess we have been reading the same entries. im hoping i can get this whole thing processed this way i can go ahead and get my books and read them or at least look at them prior to class starting.
i definitely dont miss that call center/collections environment either. i did that for quite some time and though the $$$$ was good, it was not worth it. while working for the bank, i was pushed into internal auditing and that was even more stressful and definitely not worth it in the end (long story). after that, i vowed to do what i want to do, not what my wallet tells me to.
ive been out of school for a while. it hasnt been 20+ years, but its been long. i graduated rutgers university in 1998----YIKES!!!!! its scary writing it.....cant believe how time flies. and im sure youll be able to remember how to study. being that you are very excited to start, i think that will definitely help.
im also hoping too that the market improves. ive been unemployed since june 2009--with no unemployment benefits--and it SUCKS!!! and thats putting it lightly. but enough about that. its time for new beginnings!
it seems like the closer the time gets to starting school, the slower the clock moves and the slower the days go by. GOSH i cant wait.
i dont mean to pry, but what made you choose LPN? is this something you always wanted to do?
