Why is our salary so low?

Published

Something I grapple to understand is how come our average salaries are in the $99k range. Is it because most NP's are new to the career and that skews it do the lower end?

If we are reimbursed 80% of what physicians get, why are we paid 1/4 of what physicians make? In independent states where you open up your own practice, how much do you make?

There's s a difference between no psych experience AT ALL and no psych experience as a psych NP.

Not to be disrespectful, but psych is mostly talk therapy with some knowledge of the meds. Dont need experience cor it. Just need to be empathetic and good at conversing. That is 90 percent of the job.

Actually, my understanding is that psych NPs mostly do med management and leave the majority of counseling up to other people like psychologists.

I feel bad for. Psychologists. They get their. Ph.D or Psyd and make far. Less than Psych NP.

Let's be real- it's market driven. Why does someone who has a particularly good talent at hitting and throwing a ball get paid millions? It's what society is willing to pay. Psych NPs are in a market where they can prescribe which makes far more money than counseling.

You should go into a field that you love, but you should also know your salary prior to training in it and be willing to accept it. I'm extraordinarily lucky that I get good pay in a field I love, but these college kids that get a degree in something that's not really marketable need to research it before they sign up for student loans.

Absolutely correct. And all those talking skills will be crucial when you have you 15 min. allotted to each pt. after you become a prescription writing machine:)

Psych NPs don't do therapy, they manage medications for psychiatric disorders and need more then just "some" knowledge of meds. Their whole job is meds.

This thread has me very concerned. I have never heard so much negative talk on a nursing thread. Let's think about it for a second. If thousands of people are being added to the health system, fewer physicians are going into primary care, those in primary care want a life and no longer practice like in the good old days, and those in practice are not willing to see patients at a discount who do not have insurance, who FILLS THE NEED. Physicians cannot complain unless they are going to be part of the solution. Nurses should not bad-mouth the NP profession, but instead act to strengthen the programs. And please, do not listen to cousin Willis who think NPs are cutting in on the profits.

On a side note, I wonder about physicians who bad mouth the NP profession, but appear clueless to the fact that nurses are saving them on a regular basis, and these same nurses could alert patients to mis-management of their care by physicians in the office and hospital. Also, many physicians cannot make a diagnosis without ordering every test in sight and running up the national debt. Is that considered good medical training?

We work as a team, each one enhancing the other. The public already distrusts us all, so why not spend our energies making health care better for our fellow citizens?

The op milked us gud

There are some states that have made it illegal to use the title Dr. in a clinical environment if you are not a MD or DO. I know Oklahoma (where I am) has such a law. Now the funny thing about this law is a chiropractor is still allowed to used the title Doctor??? Figure that one out. I personally will have no problem with referring to myself as Nurse Practitioner and will proudly do so.

Im not concerned. The negative, uninformed comments reflect on the person - not the profession. Some clearly have resentment for whatever reason... :-)

Great reflection!!

How many NP programs are offered online. Even if they were have you done any to be able to judge the severity of the program. So long as a program is approved, let it be approved. The subject Matter is on how the work of an NP is reimburst 80% to that of an MD and he is earning not upto a 1/4 of that money
