Why are RNs scared of Fighting the Hospital Admin?

U.S.A. Texas

Just a questions why are so many Nurses here in Texas scared to stand with the 3 Fired Nurses in Mesquite and to stand up to the Hospital admin?

I'm not sure people are so much afraid as they are unaware. I don't know how many times I've heard someone say, "It's always been this way," or worse "I always took 8 or more patients, you can do it." I don't think people realize there are other options. It's kinda of sad really.

I also don't think people understand that if they come together, and it's more than just 3 or 4 people who are asking the hard questions, and fighting the good fight, that almost anything can be accomplished. Just look at history, our nation was founded by a bunch of people who raised questions, and the were willing to stand by what they believed. Until the 1920's women couldn't vote-who changed that? Or what about civil rights, or 40 hour work weeks, or child labor laws?

What if everyone who wished everyone else well decided to call a friend and talk to them about what's really going on-what kind of change that could make?

I don't know what happened in Mesquite, and I honestly don't care. What I do know is when change is worth fighting for more people will fight. Look at the Revolutionary War , people thought the founders were idiot trying to get them selves killed (much worse than loosing a job.) But, when push came to shove the country was able to form a little milita that kept a big army at bay. Sure it was hard work, but if no one did it and everyone wished everyone else well we'd still be singing "Hail to the Queen" paying our bills with pounds, and wondering why someone who has never seen our country was making the rules (sound familar?)

... and an experienced RN can pull in around 30-40.00/hour.

Apparently, that's not the norm. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Texas nurses make $26-$27 an hour on average.

I'm sure there are some great deals on houses in Texas but with unreasonable patient loads and the constant threat of random firings ... not to mention Group One, which is the most outrageous scam I've ever heard of ...

I'm not sure how great that cheap house will be if your choices are having to tolerate horrendous working conditions or ... getting blacklisted, shut out of the marketplace all together and not being able pay the mortgage.

Personally, I'll take my chances on California. I bought my cheap desert house four years ago for $150K, my fixed mortgage payment is $1200 a month, including taxes and insurance. Now that housing prices are falling, you can pick up the same house for about $200-250K today.

And, thanks to California unions ... I'm making $43 an hour, $63 an hour OT.

More importantly... I can't be fired without cause. Needless to say ... us California nurses aren't scared of fighting management.

I am forever grateful for California nursing unions.
