I'm just starting out, but plan on going into med-surg. Please keep us posted how it goes, and main job responsibilities. I really don't know much about this dept.

Good luck with your new job! :)

Specializes in Med/Surg, Ortho.

Med/surg is a fast paced ever changing environment. You have to be aware of many different symptoms etc and be able to intervene quickly sometimes. You have a wide range of age groups. You may have 10 patients on a team with just as many diagnosis and need to be just as aware of the first patient as the last. Some are walkie/talkies, some are total care. Its just the wide variety of differnt patient types you come across on a med/surg floor. You have to know your procedures, you have to know your A&P and terminology. Its a wonderful environment for someone who likes change and can keep up with it. Some patients are being discharged in 24 hours,, some stay for a week,, some a month who knows. It's not as bad as it sounds.
