Why I am leaving my private duty case....

Published

After a little over a year I am finally giving up...I actually really dislike my client. 1st it is was his mother's bipolar moods and I realized that it is probably him making her like that. I go to work with him and I find him an ignorant, selfish person. He hides it from his colleagues well, but he treats us nurses just too ignorant for my liking. I am a positive, easy going person and I find myself drained being around him. I hate my job now. I called off tomorrow and I dont think that I can even go back at all! No wonder that case is hard to staff! I really like the agency though. When I 1st started, I just couldn't imagine why the nurses were just leaving..now I know! I could really go off, but I will leave it at this....I will never let any family treat me like his mother and he has at times!

thanks for letting me vent;-)

My private duty client's mom had unrealistic expectations. Although she knew I had other employment, she expected her needs to be met first and foremost. I didn't like the feeling of being "bought and paid for".

They can really suck the life out of you. I recently left a case where periodically the abusive comments would improve, but the cycle always returned. Call me horrible, but I'd rather go dumpster-diving than have someone who's care is paid for by me and the rest of the taxpayers get ****** off at me for not washing their kitchen floor, too -- when I cannot afford medical insurance for me and my own kids!!!

Are they kidding with that imperious "you are the help" attitude? Nope, time for a break. That should not happen in a just and sane world.

My family's great, but every now and then they ask if I'd fold some of my client's laundry and put it away "if I get bored in the middle of the night." I've done it a few times, because I do have a lot of spare time, and they haven't made a habit of it. But that can become a slippery slope real quick.

I don't mind doing the client's laundry, as long as it is the client's laundry only. I had one dippidy do whose off the street caregivers would put their thong underwear in with her clothes for me to wash. They never did the client's laundry, it was saved for the licensed nurse to wash. When I said something about it, I got bounced. Who, in their right mind wants to be picking up and handling someone's nasty thong underwear?

haha, I wouldn't even mind doing that!(not under garments though:-) but seriously, I can't stand how the son(my client) and his mother act so elitist!mostly the son acts like this though, I actually see her for only 30 minutes out of the 7 or 8. Another nurse told me, they do appreciate me and think I am a good nurse, but it is a tough case. I miss doing regular nursing also. I feel like a high priced companion. He really just thinks so little of his nurses....that is what really gets to me! I really do love being a nurse, but I am burned out! I need to get excited about my career again....

I have found that there is nothing to get excited about anymore. All of the episodes of weeks and months of being unemployed, and the initial downsizing that interfered with me finishing school, has done it for me. The negative attitudes from client families and my agency employers only adds the finishing touches. I only remain because I can't get employment elsewhere at my age.

Yes, I do hear that from others. There are really no great nursing jobs out there it seems. A few of my friends who are nurses also are burned out also, but say there is no other career at this time in their life where they can make as much money as they do...they do continue to be excellent nurses, but would love to get out of nursing all together.

I just wanted to update my op...I did drop a day(I keep dropping days from when I originally started) with this case and picked up some ltc shifts(ahh another post!), so will be with the case less and I think my client realized some things..so I will see where it goes..

Happy the day that you have full employment elsewhere and can drop your last day with this unpleasant case.

Sometimes a reality check works at least long enough to buy some time to plan for the future. Thanks for updating!
