I've heard that nurses only get continuing education to meet state requirements for licensure. I don't think that this is the case, but I wanted to ask others.

Why do you pursue continuing education?

I pursue it because I think it's important to keep myself up to date. My hospital offers free courses, so they are easy to take advantge of.

Specializes in Oncology/Haemetology/HIV.

All of the above.

Specializes in Everything but psych!.

I like to. It keeps me current in my field. It's a way to get a day off and enjoy networking with other professionals in my field, and lastly, for the CEU's. But, I went to CEU programs even when I didn't need them.

It's funny. I have wanted to further my education, but I found that I did not understand things occurring in my office such as discussions about research and healthcare politics- both heavily affect nursing. I don't get alot of opportunity to attend seminars, dinners, or experiences, outside of work. My work doesn't pay for it either.

So I look for topics on my own time. Plus I went back to school. Both have helped me stay on top of things and look at the bigger picture a little better.
