Who makes the hiring decision?

Is it the unit director or the Hr/nurse recruiter?

Specializes in FNP.

Between the two of them, the hiring manager (although I have never in my career met anyone with that title). We always hired by committee decision on the unit after the person was vetted by HR. Then HR took back over for contract negotiation. In other words, we chose who we wanted, but we didn't have anything to do with their salary or benefits. If they didn't agree to the offer determined by HR's algorithm, or failed their employee health screen or something, we had to make another choice.

We have an HR recruiter who along with the manager of the unit, unit coordinator, and the peer in the interview make the hiring decisions.

Specializes in ER.

And, sometimes it can get political. The manager of the unit may want you, but the CNO or the director of that service want's someone else, or the qualifications don't exactly meet, etc.

Sometimes, HR applies the criteria for the job so stringently that qualified people never even get sent to the manager of the department, because not everyone uses the same terminology to describe what they've done in previous positions.

But, basically- as noted above, manager decides, HR takes over and finalizes details.

I think this just happened to me. I think HR nailed me due to the parent corporation's must haves not the NM and hiring team :sniff:

Normally the HR takes up the preliminary tests and interview. In many cases they only do the finalization also. And the director come into picture after recruitment, just for a formality sake only. But if the hospital is not a very big one, then only the director participates in the recruitment process.
