Who can write a health care plan?

Is it acceptable for a Registered Nurse who does not hold a Type 73 certificate to write individual health care plans?

Is it acceptable for the registered nurse to only provide nursing care plans?

Please clarify.

Specializes in school nursing, ortho, trauma.

In my state only a state certified school nurse can write an IHP

Specializes in Renal, Orthopedic, and School.

This varies from state to state. You need to check with your lead nurse, your local school board policies and the Board of Nursing of your state.

I am in the state of Illinois. I have still not been able to come up with a clear answer.

Martha Burgren, I would appreciate your input.

Thank You

Registered nurses in Illinois can write individualized health care plans and emrgency care plans in any setting including schools.

Type 73 certified school nurses are required for IEP meetings and setting IEP goals and for Section 504 accomodations. SInce Illinois requires certification, the federal IDEA requires that if a state has certification, for any IDEA activity all participants must have the state credentials - the nurse, social worker, teacher, psychologist etc. If they do not have the credentials, the school risks having federal funding withheld.

I am not sure I understand the question? Only RNs can write care plans in Illinois. Are you saying all you do is write the care plans and other nonlicensed people carry them out? If that is what you meant, in essence you are delegating, and you must teach those individuals on how to provide the care, evaluate their understanding and skill in delivering the care and supervise them, ie, check back regularly to verify their skills. You must be available for anything that requires nursing judgment - you cannot delegate nursing judgment. Is that the question you were asking?
