Who believes instructors can be out to get you?

I'm curious, what are your thoughts on this ? Do you think instructors can fail you from a class because of personality conflicts and nothing else?

You had a thread about why you were put on probation, and the reason given there wasn't about the ADD, it was about something else.

Is your ADD currently being treated? My son has ADD and we follow a treatment plan. Seems to help him. :twocents:

Yep its perfectly under control now. Before it wasn't and I nearly failed out of school because of it. I had 2 very supportive instructors the first 2 semesters. The second put me on remediation at the end of the semester which only made me a better nurse. I was not completing all my paper work, not acting professional, being very IMPULSIVE got in troulbe for that, etc. She looked at me as being immature and unprofessional which is why I was put on remediation. After I starting having problems it HIT ME.. my add was not under control. I was displaying s/s of someone who has add and wasn't even on meds. I thought about it for a few days, and i ended up having another meeting with the instructor and told her about my add because i had not told anyone about it before. And she said that it all made sense now and she was glad to see it wasn't something she was doing wrong, or that i didn't care or want to be in nursing school.

After that semester I got put on adderall which helped me straighten myself out. Then I got put on probation in the procefss of being "straightened out." But once i got my **** together i passed the semester and did well clinically and I still am doing a good job.

I'm glad to hear you and your instructor were able to work things out. ADD is something my son and I struggle with everyday. As you said people can misinterpret s/s of ADD as not caring or laziness. I'm glad your instructor was understanding. Good luck in the rest of your schooling.:wink2:

Yes can happen. I do my best to make sure it never happens with me tho. I work my *** off, I keep my mouth shut, I don't challenge authority and I accept the instructor's word as gospel unless I am able to politely question the logic. Even with that, if I don't get the resolution I'm looking for very quickly I back off and accept what I've been given. Do I sound like a whipped puppy? Sure, but my motto is to learn as much a possible from every instructor and textbook at my disposal, not make any troublesome waves, and get through it. Cooperate and Graduate.

By the way, I will be accepting hate mail for my unpopular opinion between the hours of 2359 and 2400 daily.

I don't have any hate mail for you! In fact, I agree with you wholeheartedly! I am here to get that degree and be able to write RN after my name. I am here to learn the best I can. Keep my eyes on the prize.

BTW, you are not a whipped puppy. I cut my adult teeth in the corporate world. You had to know which way the wind blew or you could be out of a job. Sometimes the best thing is to: (1) ask and then (2) sit down and shut up. That's why the good Lord gave us two ears (to hear) and only one mouth (to talk).

I believe that some instructors are on a power high, they know that they can treat students in any fashion they chose simply because there is nothing that can be done about it.

As far as working in the real world...you have choices, you can just leave if you are being disrespected, you don't have to put up with being bullied or mistreated. And yes, I think that it goes on much more than people realize.

I don't believe any are out to get you that would defeat the whole purpose of letting you in. However if you constantly complain or argue with the instructors then you present a nice big target on your back. The point is in school, just keep your mouth shut do what you are told and do not bad mouth the program or instructors at any time because it will get back to them. No one brings a student into a program to weed them out, the students do that on their own.

Its exactly the reason I was put on probation.. i talked to the DON about it. And she told me that it was because my instructor didn't think I was competent because of my add. If i ended up failing that semester i was going to make a big deal about it.. file a grievance and do all the necessary steps that I needed to do in order to not be held back because of an instructors dislike towards me.

If your ADD interferes with giving good competent care then you should fail. Because someone has some syndrome or other ailment does not exclude them from providing competent care. Now I don't know if you were or were not but you seem to be implying that because someone has some sort of disability that excludes them from performing to standards of other students, and that is simply not true.
