Which job would you take?

Nurses General Nursing

I'm having a tough time making a decision and would love some input from fellow nurses.

Given the choice, which of these 2 jobs would you take:

Job one- is basically In a nurses call centre. Making arrangements for pt. transfers, referrals etc. It is day shifts 7:30-3:30 four days a week. The management and staff seemed super nice and it's really hard to get into. However is only a temporary line with possibility of continuing after the year is up. But may have to go back to my current position.

Job 2- on a medical/pulmonary unit. 12 hour shifts with a mixture of both days and nights. Would be working 2 shifts one week and 3 the next.

Oh and I should add, the first job I would only have to work 1 weekend a month and it is a 9am start on the weekend.

The first job would be every other weekend

I mean the second job would be every other weekend

It seems like the second job would provide better experience on which to build your future nursing career. The first one seems like a nursing job for someone who doesn't really want to do bedside nursing.

I am most concerned with choosing the job that will allow me to be the happiest in life and allow time to spend with my family and other activities. It's a tough choice...

Specializes in Oncology.

Is pay similar?

Is pay similar?

Same base rate of pay but with the first job since it is all day shifts I would never be getting the $5/hr shift differential I would get when working nights on the second job.

Two totally different career trajectories...

Do you not want to be a clinical nurse? If so, take the call-center job... but realize that it may be exceedingly difficult to get back to the bedside going forward.

If you want to move toward case management and a desk job then obviously take the call-center job.

Regarding scheduling: That's a personal preference. Personally, I like working some weekends because it means that I get some days off during the week when everybody else is at work and I detest crowds.

If you are saying the 2nd job rotates between day shift and night shift, that would answer the question for me...I'd take the 1st one. Actually, I'd probably take the 1st one anyway.

Sooo hard to decide and I need to make a choice by Monday

Are you a new grad? Do you have any experience? What is your current position? Too much info missing to give an answer for you. I would totally take the first one, but I am burnt out on floor nursing and would love those hours. If you still need clinical experience take 2. The issue with 1 is that it could be temporary and in a year you will be lacking clinical experience. You might consider taking 1 and keeping your current job prn.
