Which job would you take?

Published

So if you were looking at two job offers and...

Job #1) Offered the perfect position, the duties are exactly what you have been looking for BUT the environment is a concern... staff doesn't always get along, a consultant team has come in to help everyone "communicate better," the docs can be arrogant etc...

while,

Job #2) Offered the perfect environment, everyone is friendly and helpful, docs are sane, things are organized, etc.. etc.. but the position is not exactly what you wanted, it's close, but it contains some duties you were hoping to avoid. Those duties are infrequent, but will be stress inducing all the same.

What would you choose? The position with the ideal environment or the position with the ideal duties/responsibilites?

No, waiting for a job that contains the best of both worlds is not an option.

Specializes in Community, OB, Nursery.

I would go for the environment. Your coworkers can make your life great or they can make your life hell, both in and out of work. I would go with the less wonderful job in terms of duties; it has been my experience that great coworkers more than make up for any job duties that stink.

Position #2 for pretty much the same reasons others have mentioned. Those stress inducing times are easier to navigate when you are working with a supportive team.

Specializes in ER, Occupational Health, Cardiology.

The Ideal Environment, hands down. We can't always get what we want, but it sounds as though you might be coming prett-y darn close! If you don't like the atmosphere or the folks you work with, it is a deadly situation to be in, professionally.

Specializes in Day program consultant DD/MR.

Offer #2 is what I would go for. You say it has job duties that will cause stress but they are infrequent. If you go with option#1 you will have stress daily for the whole shift.

I was leaning towards #2 and I knew logically I should run fast from #1, but I was still thinking maybe I could make it work... you all gave me the slap upside the head I needed! I accepted #2. Thanks everyone!
