Which answer would you pick?

I swear, sometimes when I do practice questions I feel like I do not know anything anymore. Please guess before you read the next post which contains the answer :)

The M.D. prescribes sulfisoxazole (Gantrisin) 2 g PO qid for a patient. Which of the following instructions is MOST important for the nurse to include when teaching the client about this medication?

A "Drink plenty of fluids."

B "Wear sunscreen when outdoors."

C "Eliminate dairy products from your diet."

D "Take this medication with food."

Well my Davis's Drug Guide says salfa drugs have sun sensitivity as does my pharm book and med surg book but I'm sure Kaplan must be right! LOL But, I do see now that crystal formation would be more serious. I am just getting a kick out of some of the rationales.

I sure picked sunscreen because I thought sulfa drugs had photosensitivity issues...but I guess I can see why the crystal formation would be a "more" serious side effect. I mean go ahead and burn your face off in the sun...but PLEASE don't get a kidney stone.

P.S.----if you just scroll down this list to the S drugs, it seems sulfa drugs are present

This is very good advice!!!!

I always get nervous & question using a source when I find something like this that just doesn't make sense but I need to just agree to disagree and remember it is just 1 question out of thousands.

I would be 100% ok with the question if it said in the rationale that while sun sensitivity is an issue it is most important for the RN to teach about drinking fluids because the side effect is more serious or whatever. OH well, moving on...slowly...need coffee...

When the drug guide contradicts the rationale presented as the right answer, that tells you not to get wrapped around the axle about this. Answer a question as best you can and move on.
