Where are all the SVC students at? (spring 2015)

U.S.A. Washington

I see a lot of post about people applying to programs at different schools all across the state, but I haven't really seen anyone post about applying to Skagit Valley College's nursing programs (they offer several).

I've applied to two schools: Everett CC and Skagit Valley College. The application process for each school is different, but SVC's was by far an easier process - even with this process being new to the school and all.

Though I'm really hoping I will get accepted to Everett because of the long standing history and the great clinical locations, I still want to get accepted to SVC as a back up. The way I see it is in the end as long as I have my Associates and an RN license, it'll all be the same come BSN completion time.

This is not to say that having a job sooner rather than later in a place I would actually like to work isn't also a factor. In fact, that's one of my biggest motivators for applying to Everett. I hear a lot of tell that you are more likely to get a job at some place you've done your clinicals, and EvCC does clinicals at most of places I want to work at.

But anyways.... Spring 2015 is only the second quarter in which the school is using the TEAS as an entrance exam as well as a points based system to quantify their students. There's a rundown below if you are interested.

SO, any SVC Students out there who use these forums?

If so, are you in a nursing program? Which one? Just taking your prereqs? Are you planning to apply to one of SVC's programs? Or are you just taking the prereqs somewhere closer to home? Are you just now looking at taking some classes and considering going to SVC?

Here's a quick run down:

  • 40 points: You need to have an 3.0 in your core sciences, and a 3.0 overall for prereqs. If you have that, then you get all 40 points. There is no part way.
  • 40 points: Teas. You take your overall adjusted score and times it by 40, and that's the number of points you get. For example, I scores an 86%, so I got 34.4 points in this category.
  • 20 points: This one is strange. I will link to the score sheet so you can see for yourself, but basically the only way to get all 20 points is by having a CNA license or 250 hours through an LPN program or working as an LPN. I have my CNA, and I personally don't think that taking the class and passing the test should count for more points that some of the other options that only get you 12, but I'm not the one who designed it.

Congratulations Jonathan! I'm looking forward to

meeting everyone at the mandatory meeting in a couple weeks.

Hello their I got accepted into spring, and my adjusted score was 84 and overall 93/100.

Congratulations Dave!

That's great Dave! It'll be fun to meet you!

Do you guys have all your shots in ? I just need 1 more and was freaking out

I finished mine up last week!

Yes, but I need to update my PPD test. Does anyone know when we need proof of our immunizations?

I haven't heard when we need to provide vaccination records. I plan on bringing mine with me on Tuesday just in case!

Hopefully I am not affected, I have mine scheduled on March 6 and 9th since I had a live vaccine I had to wait 28 days before I received another one.. and it didn't help that the varicella was a two shot dose. I am taking my vaccines in on the 24 as well, Just in case... I don't know about you guys but I ecstatic to be starting school...

Ok, so for everyone that has been accepted into the spring quarter entry I have a couple questions.

1. Are you guys buying your stethoscope, clipboard, gloves, etc soon or are you waiting for an actual list to be handed out that outlines what is required.

2. How is the reading going? I just finished up reading the two assigned books, and the nursing fundamentals book I found very dry, and hard to read while the pharmacology book I found interesting and easy to grasp.

3. Will you guys be going to the april 6th event?

Hello Dave,

So I see you posted here a few days ago now, hopefully this reply isn't too late. To answer your questions I'll tell you what I personally am doing:

1. I have already bought my own stethoscope, but I only did this because I want a quality stethoscope. Everything else I've decided just to wait and get a feel for what I'll need.

2. The reading has been going well for me. I agree with you, the pharma reading is super interesting and fun to read, while the nursing fundamentals is not quite as "upbeat".

3. I plan on being at the April 3rd event if I can, but I am not positive at this point in time.

Hopefully this helped a little!

Jonathan

Hello,

I was looking into applying at SVC for the nursing program and was wondering about the CNA points. Do you know if you get the points with the class certification or if you also have to take the Wa state exam and have the license to get the points?
