I am a 50 year old, very well spoken and mature CHHA interested in pursuing RN degree. I only have a high school diploma. Where would I start in order to pursue this endeavor? How long might it take? I am a mom of three ages almost 11, 12 and 14 and married. Family is ready to support me no matter what it takes. Cost and financing my education is a concern. All responses appreciated.

depends on many things. are you seeking an associates or bachelors degree? can you go to school full-time or part-time? are you working full time? can you afford to stop working for a while? for a basic start, you can go online and look at the different colleges and universities in your area that offer nursing. most have a wealth of information and can answer many of your questions, including tuition cost etc.... good luck!

Check out the local programs that are available to you. You should go to your nearest community college and see an advisor. Start the process to take prerequisite courses for admission to nursing school. Your first step will probably be assessment tests in math, English, and perhaps chemistry. Get enrolled and start. You can get the advisement and assessment tests done in time to start in the summer session.

I was in the same situation as you, working and have a family so I needed the easiest way to obtain my degree and the most cost effective. I was interested in getting my bachelors so I looked into different bachelors programs and narrowed it down to 3 schools. I made a list of all the pre-reqs that I could take at a community college and then went to www.njtransfer.org to see what classes from the community college were equivalent to the bachelor programs pre-reqs. So long story short, I took all my pre-reqs at a community college and obtained an associates in liberal arts and science and now I will be transferring to a 4 yr college to finish up my nursing. I saved alot of money but it takes alot of time so if you want something faster I would recommend attending a nursing program at a 2 yr school and work for a little bit and then go back to school for your bachelors. Your job may even pay for you to go back to school so that's an option as well. Good Luck!
I am presently employed with a large health care provider working about 20 hours a week per diem. I believe this is my "calling" and that I would be a wonderful nurse. I am ready to put in the effort, but would like to pursue the fastest route. Presently getting information from my employer regarding the program they offer, but you must be enrolled in nursing school to qualify. Is this an impossible dream I am reaching for at the age of 50?
No, it is not impossible at age 50. There have been people in their 60s in nursing school. One lady just posted a couple of days ago that she is 57 and just got accepted to a nursing program. If you want to do it badly enough, you can do it. The hard part is getting those As in prerequisite courses so that your application is competitive. Good luck.
