Where do you put your stethoscope?

Published

Just finished my first semester (yeah!) and can't get my last clinical rotation out of my head. My instructor stated that we should keep our steths in our pocket and not around our neck. She claimed that it was unprofessional and only doctors and nurses on TV wear them around the neck. Eventhough I've seen plenty of professional staff with it around their necks, I've tried to comply, but twice ended up knocking the cap off of my markers and ended up ruining my uniforms which are white. Also with all the stuff we're expected to carry around in our pockets, it takes me forever to take out the steth without papers, 4x4s, etc. joining up. So, just wondering what everyone else does.

I've been told it causes neck pain after a while, which makes sense considering the weight of some steths but I've NEVER heard of it being unprofessional. That sounds like the opinion of that particular instructor. I too have a "holster" for mine and it works quite well; I have noticed fewer HA's at the end of my shifts. In fact, I have a white, black and clear depending on my particular location at the time. ;)

I wear mine around the neck when I'm doing my assessments, otherwise, it sits at my computer, just waiting to be stolen.

I'm reviving this old thread because my stethoscope pulls at my hair when I wear a ponytail. My first nursing professor insisted we put them in our pocket, so I got used to being poked in the ribs whenever I bent over in clinical, but my current professor doesn't care where we put them. Neither pocket or neck is working for me, and I'm bummed to see that the hip clip makes the steth catch on things in tight spaces. What's a girl to do?!?

I guess you'll just have to pick your battle. Since the stethoscope hanging around my neck causes it to ache and my pockets are not big enough, I have chosen the battle of using a batclip. It still catches on things, but not as bad as a hip clip. Check it out:

I use my cargo pockets on my scrubs or it goes around my neck. It just depends on what I'm doing I guess. It just stays where I put it last until I need it again.

The batclip sounds awesome! Thanks for the suggestion!
