Where does the new Associate Degree RN fit in?

The hospitals snub their noses at us because we don't have a BSN, leaving us no other alternative than to work at long-term care facilities, where most LPN's are employed. The long-term care facility staff are resentful towards us because we are taking the jobs that would normally be given to LPNs or immigrant RNs. Where do we belong?

I am an ADN RN. I obtained my degree in Minnesota. While I was in school I was working at a Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND. Sanford will not hire ADN's in the hospital setting, but will in the clinic setting. There is also Essentia Health in the area. They will hire ADN's in the hospital setting. I did not want to stay in the MidWest though and moved down to the Houston, TX area. I found a job right away at a County Hospital down in the Houston area. I will be working in a cardiac chest pain urgent care. I think it all depends on the company you are applying too. I think County hospitals are much more willing to hire ADN's. I did get plenty of rejections from hospitals that claimed Magnet status and said their nurses NEED to have their BSN

The baby boomers are not retiring any time soon! They have no retirement to live on to support themselves on for such luxuries as food, shelter. The economy went bust= stock prices bottomed out, and so went 401K's which is what the 401K's , money market accounts and mutual funds were linked to; were micromanaged out of their jobs- too many times tardy/fired, poor penmanship/fired,too high a payscale/fired, took to many paid sick days off/fired, pick-pick-pick-pick-pick/fired, stopped at the stop sign that everyone else blows through/fired, been at the place of employment too long/fired= lost their pensions, lost 401K's. had to use saving acount/nest egg and 401K left to live on, which adds up to ZERO savings=ZERO retirement.

Look up the retirement benefit amounts of social security just to get an idea of how long all will be waiting for the baby boomers to retire. Look up medicare benefits just to give a clearer picture on how long it will be before baby boomers retire.

My guess is alot of them who are unemployed boomers now have said- screw it. I'm poor now and have been for atleast 4 yrs since the recession, I have adapted to this income level. i am not aggravating myself with this workforce and new mentality any more. Those who didn't found adaptive jobs and those who remainded steadfast took a hit also and as long as they can show up for work, buy hair dye and botox- they will go to work. Those who still have mortgages at 65 years old- sent their own kids to college- either paid those loans off or used the old homestead as collateral for the loan. Baby Boomers were not on shuch financially sound ground befor the recession and economy crash.- they had much debt. Oh and let's not forget the divorce rate of the baby boomers- there's a mountain of debt of another kind and huge debt it is.

All the young hopefuls may very well be sitting around waiting for 10 years or more years.!!! 65 year olds with no retirment saved and having to start all ovewr again can easily work another 10 years The long awaited mass retirement wave will not happen in the next year!!!

Can anyone direct me to the nearest food pantry, and homeless shelter

not really- every one is waiting for the boomers to retire to jump into their graves, they keep citing this as the reason for why they are not finding their DRRRRRRRRRRRRRRReam job. "when the boomers get out, when the boomers retire, when the boomers die, you will fit in here, I will fit in there"

I merely presented my clarification in my HO where all will fit in and a ball park figure of how long that will take to "fit"

I think she was meerly asking in regards to BSN. Since many places would rather hire BSN's as opposed to ADN's. So it can be hard to find places that are willing to hire ADN's that are new grads. New ADN's are not really the go to applicant of a company. Doesn't really matter if the baby boomers are working or retired. It matters about the ADN new grad status and who is willing to give us a chance to prove what we know.

In my part of Virginia, ADNs are very prevalent, even at the local Magnet status hospital. The health system has an excellent education package to help all of their ADNs achieve BSN (and the LPNs to bridge up as well!). There are many ADN and BSN programs locally, but the 2 year school I graduated from does put out a "better nurse" if you ask any of the middle management nursing staff "off the record". I just finished my ADN in May and I am anxiously awaiting my admission letter to a BSN program, but that is simply because I have a desire to advance my education, not for hiring purposes. I will be starting in an 18 bed ICU Stepdown unit on Tuesday that hired 3 other GNs. I definitely agree it is regional and dependent upon the programs in the area. The only difficulty ADNs have with the large health systems in this area is that there are so many of us and only so many preceptors to go around! The closer you get to DC the harder it is for an ADN because there are more BSN programs available. Then there is the additional aspect of CEUs required for recert--Virginia has 0 and DC has quite a few, so people move around (the hospital systems here require a certain number of CEUs for your annual appraisal).
