I finally have everything in hand (work visa, etc) and my family and I are planning on moving up to Vancouver from Oregon. We are now looking for a place to live, and haven't been really thrilled with the places we've seen IN Vancouver so we are looking outside the city. We've found a couple of places and I'm looking at neighborhoods. One is in Queensborough, and one is in Surrey. I've heard things about Surrey and I was leery at first, but this is the very northern tip, right across from New Westminster, so I wasn't sure. With the price of gas what it is, and needing all our $'s to move, we can't waste trips up there!
Thanks for all input!
You want to stay far, far away from Whalley (North Surrey). Queensborough is ok, but you'd have to bus it to the skytrain.
What about near Lougheed in Burnaby/Coquitlam? Or the Brentwood area in Burnaby?
I live in New Westminster on the quay. It's nice on this side of the tracks, but the skytrain area has become very creepy - lots of druggies and homeless. I'm hoping it'll get better once they build the new condos and shopping area.
OK, so we're going up this weekend to see the above-mentioned houses, as well as another we got a line on that we really are interested in. Question - the house appears to be on the Musqueam reserve, by UBC. Does anyone have any experience living in that area? What with the university, the park and all the golf courses it seems like it should be nice, and we've heard good things about Point Grey Secondary which, I believe, is where our daughter would go. We've been to Kerrisdale and UBC, but never really in the Musqueam/Southlands area.
Well, that's an expensive area of town whether renting or buying.
Musqueam Band owns the land and leases it to the homeowners. Remember a couple of years ago the Band raised the rent and the leaseholders went nuts.
I've always thought of that area as kind of isolated. Back in my youth, the Pt. Grey High School kids thought they were god's gift to the lower mainland, followed closely by those who lived in British Properties. A lot of them had very large senses of entitlement. Think of Beverly Hills brats...
Are you looking to buy a place or rent first? If you're going to rent, the neighbourhood I'm living in is very nice and fairly close to BC Womens. I live at Cambie/W. 16th Avenue. Our complex has apartments and townhouses if you're thinking about renting and I can vouch that it's a really nice rental unit. Again, it depends on how much you're looking to spend.
PM me if you're interested in rental info.
Good luck with your move.

I would go with Queensborough over Surrey for sure.
