Where do you keep your stethescope?

Nurses Uniform/Gear

Published

Ok I'm a second year nursing student in my BSN, in clinical i don't know where to put my stethescope. i want it on my all the time to keep it handy I hate the way it feels around my neck, and it always seems to get in the way there. I tried having it in my pants side pocket but it seems to me that that may not be the best thing for my littman. with all the tubing bent.

SO what does every one do with theirs to carry them around? is there some system available?

thanx SR

I agree, i have a cheapo, so i wont cry if i lose it. Scrunch it up in my pocket works for me. Just don't hang it on your rear view mirror  , or wear it to the grocery store, i swear i've seen it!!!! Major faux pas......hahaha

Mine has bought groceries with me more than once! I didn't realize that I was being fashionably incorrect! lol

I feel naked without my Littman around my neck! I have bought and made covers for it. That helps a lot. I have scratched my name into the bell and work in an area where a stethescope is protected for the owner (amazing!). In fact a co-worker dropped mine off at my house last night after she had borrowed it (a patient was going into respirator arrest and I didn't pause when she took it off my neck to take a listen). I do love working there!

i work in icu, so i only have 1-2 patients. my stethescope goes in my bag (kept in my patient's room -- the safest place for it!) as soon as i'm done using it. of course, i've had so many infected patients, the stethescope hasn't come out of the bag in weeks!

Nylon belt and belt bag that carries stethoscope, scissors, tape, gloves, pen...

Not too big. Would be perfect but haven`t seen anyone fashionably wearing one of those in a hospital uniform...

We've been told specifically by our instructors NOT to wear them around our necks. Its a safety hazard :nono: So I end up putting mine in my pocket and it looks like I've got a massive growth on my leg!

I realize there is the possibility of a patient choking you with your scope. But, I certainly don't do everything my instructors told me, from years ago. :chuckle

You can buy a belt clip. I've seen these at scrub stores. Basically, it hooks on the waist of your pant and the bell and earpieces are secured together. Pretty neat.

i hade to figure out what the heck you were talking about... once i found a picture, i had a lightbulb moment... so THAT's what those things are for! i've seen them in uniform stores, but never clued in that they were for stethoscopes...

i wear my scope around my neck, mostly... i'm the only person i've seen at this hospital who has a stethoscope like mine and, seeing as my name's ingraved on the top of it, i think someone would have to be pretty brazen to take it and expect to use it at work...

i also have a fabric cover on it... it was causing my neck to break out in a rash...

I have always worn my stethoscope around my neck. It doesn't seem very efficient to have to keep taking it out of your pocket. It I have a psyche patient with a history of violence I just don't use it at all if there is no guard present. I don't know what type you have but Littman makes any number of lightweight models.

I don't carry a stethoscope around with me. One of my kids would probably try to strangle me or another kid with it.

When I worked medical peds, I wore it around my neck or in my pocket (Littmans are too expensive to leave lying around, you know). Kept it in my locker when I wasn't there.

If we were ours around our necks, our instructor will take it. She believes wearing them around our necks creates a hazard. I guess she read somewhere that a study was done and you could actually break someones neck with one without being that strong. she wants them in a pocket or the belt clip. i have the belt clip which i love. i bought mine at the uniform store but I know allheart.com has them. also one med student was looking at my patients huge abd wound (which by the way was oozing some stuff in colors i had never seen before!!) so he is down there checking it out i noticed is steth starting to slip, the nurse in there with me grabs my arm as it falls into the wound. we both busted out laughing in the hallway but he didn't see it as funny. I know the belt thing can be awakard (sp?) at first but I got used to it. I noticed they don't work well with scrub tops but better with the ones that button done the front. I never wear scrub tops cuz they feel confining, I always wear the button down the front with a t-shirt.

I either carry it around my neck, or leave it inside my med cart (stays safe). I tried finding a creative way to label it mine, so I finally thought to use the Hosp. ID bracelet - wrote my name on it & awkwardly tied it around my stethescope...this way, if I lose it, they'll know who it belongs to. Of course I've managed to lose it few times, but it always finds its way back to me.
