Where are all the jobs???

Published

Hello All, I have been searching for a job in Central NJ hopefully in a Hospital setting. Can anyone tell me if Robertwood Medical center takes new grads? and if so how do you apply? Also, is it me or are RN jobs scarce???:(

I've applied for a few hospitials such as St. Barnibas, Robertwood, Centra State, Bayshore and I got two call bakcs staing that they are not hiring new grads at this time? I think I will be forced to look for a job in NYC, but do not want to coomute. Is it worth the commute? I hear you must pay double taxes fro NYS and NJS? Is this true?

Specializes in Neonatal ICU (Cardiothoracic).

I commuted from Monmouth County for a year to NYC. It wasn't too bad, since I lived relatively near the GSP. You do have to pay state income taxes in both NY and NJ, but you get a credit toward your NJ taxes if you work in another state. I didn't have to pay any last year. That was after working for 6 mos though....

The salary I'm getting in NYC is about $10-$12 more an hour than the highest I was offered at the time in NJ.

It is NOT any easier in NYC for a new grad to find a job. :( Trust me, I've been looking since before I graduated in August.

Like hundreds of other nursing students graduating from nursing school I thought the job hunt begins! In nursing school our professors would tell us, “You can find a job anywhere and you can find a job in any specialty you desired.” They were wrong. Living in New Jersey / New York tri-state area where is the nursing shortage? There is no nursing shortage in the tri-state area. I am even happy to even get a call back and/or interview. Is this happening in all the major cites?

As much as we were told in nursing school that the nursing profession was recession proof our professors were wrong. In New Jersey there were approximately eight hospital closing, what does that mean for the new graduate nurse. Well, it means we are competing with experienced nurses who do not need to be as thoroughly trained as new graduates. It also means the nurses that left the profession are coming back because they or their spouses lost their jobs and need to make a living to support their families. What is a new graduate nurse to do? We work hard to get out of nursing school. Then we work hard to pass the NCLEX. Then, we must work hard to get a job and then work really hard when we start work. I’m just venting. Am I the only new graduate that feels this way?

You might need to do some footwork also. I think there are some jobs that are not always posted on the hospital's websites. I just got a email for jobs at Capital Health, have you looked at their website??? Granted, I have many years experience as a critical care RN and you need to start somewhere. I had to start on the nightshift many years ago and gradually worked my way to a dayshift job.

Also, if you look at the makeup of people that are working as nurses in hospitals you will see that many are from other countries, not sure if they are here on limited work visas. It seems to me that if so many American schooled nurses are having trouble finding jobs then why are there still so many foreign nurses here? Maybe that is something the ANA should look into??? Of course then you need to take part or belong to either the national or state organziation----NSNA---- to make your voices heard

Thanks for your input regarding this matter. I'm just gettting so frustrated. I have gone to a job fair, applied online, emailed, mailed, called, etc. I dont know what else to do. I'm begining to lose hope and my savings account is dwindiling. I know I have to give a few months to job hunt but I'm getting so frustrated. I'm not trying to be picky, I'll take anything at this point, night, day, whatever. I've broadened my horizons to PA, NJ, NY. And I got two call backs stating they are not hiring new graduats at this time. I've been on theses boards and I see so many people going through the same thing I'm going through. It's just discouraging. And they said in nuring school that nursing was recession proff, yeah right!

Ok, here's the deal; your options

As a new grad-you're most likely to get a night job in a hospital.

Nursing home, Correctional, Psych are more flexible because, most are desperate and you can work all shifts. You can also try agencies, they hire NG, pay is higher but, there is a chance of getting cancelled. I use to work for Harborside Healthcare in Bridgewater, NJ and now I'm with CureStaffing Agency.

What a lot of professors need to do is tell new grads to get into internship programs before graduations. Most hospitals take applications for the August (post-grad) programs starting in January or February. You've even missed the deadline for the March start which was back in October. That's about the best way that new grads are going to get in. Robert Wood just closed 3 departments and laid off a bunch of nurses and techs, so they're not hiring and almost nowhere is going to hire new grads when they can get experienced ones that can start much sooner without as much orientation. It's unfortunate. There is no job shortage here in NJ.

RWJUH New Brunswick??? I have only heard about Home Care closing, not other departments, what's up????

Someone at work also mentioned other hospitals laying off nurses in NJ, any other info you all know about. I do not know the specifics of the above though, it was just a general statement.

No RWJ in Hamilton. They closed the discharge lounge, rapid admit and laid off all of the tele monitor techs on all floors. A few directors and a nursing supervisor was also let go. It was in excess of 20 people and more cuts may be on the way.
