Where to get advanced degree in geriatric nursing?

I'm beginning an RN program this fall, and then plan to continue on to get and advanced degree in geriatric nursing (I already have an BA in another field, and an MA in gerontology). U of Maryland used to offer a specialty in geriatrics, but now it is simply "adult care". Does anyone know of a school/program that offers a master's with a focus on gertiatric nursing? Thanks!

If you already have a Masters in gerontology why do you want/need another? You can become certified through the ANCC in Gerontology but you have to have actual real life experience not just degrees.

An MA in gerontology is not the same as an MSN with a specialty in gerontological NP, which is what is required for ANCC certification. I'm guessing that's what the OP is talking about when s/he says "an advanced degree in geriatric nursing."

Thanks ElkPark. This is what I was looking for and hadn't found it earlier. Nothing in Maryland yet, but perhaps I there will be by the time I'm ready!

You're right about the MA in gerontology not being enough, as another poster had assumed. The MA is covers policy, socioeconomic issues as well as health aspects of aging, but was not clinical in nature. It provides a great foundation, but since I realized I really am interested in the health angle, I decided to pursue geriatric nursing. I'm sure I'll be looking to all of you for more advice as I venture on!

You may want to try doing a Google or other search -- it has been discussed on this site before that, because the allnursingschools site basically charges schools to advertise there, it's not a comprehensive list of all available programs. Many schools just choose not to pay to be listed.

Since you have previous degrees and know what direction you want to go in nursing, you may want to skip a generic, "basic" nursing program and go directly into a "direct-entry" MSN program, if you can find one with the gero NP specialty -- these programs are designed for people who already have (at least) a BA/BS in something else, and combine basic nursing education and an MSN program in one program. You graduate (in 2 or 3 years, depending on the program) with RN licensure plus the specialty advanced education, in one fell swoop. :)

Yep, that's my plan! I know lots of schools now have online programs as well, which could be a good option too. I did my MA online and loved it.

Case Western is offering distance learning, with "intensive" courses on campus that last a few days, with the rest of the work online. Since I'm originally from Cleveland, and Case is a great school, I will look at that too. And, like you said, I'll do more searches to see if I can find something else closer to home that may not be listed on nursing school website.
