When will you stop trying to be a nurse when you are not making progress?

Published

I have failed so much in two nursing schools because I had to work. I am not happy when I am not doing something in regards to nursing school or the medical field. I am trying to find another school now that I am not working like I used to. what would you do? I have been in this race for 10 years off and on.

Do you trust online nursing? I only qualify for Excelsior.

Has 18 years experience.

I've read most of your posts before replying. I think it is time for you to step away from nursing and look at other healthcare related fields. Have you considered Social Work?

You have tried two different nursing programmes and then tried to convert to PN. Now you are considering distance ed. That is an incredibly hard way to earn a degree. The clinicals still have to be performed in real time with real nursing school instructors.

You are roughly the same age as me and I know everyone will tell you there are lots of jobs away from the hospital floor and that is true but you have to make it through school and usually work for a while to gain the experience to get the non-hospital jobs. I know I'm ready to explore the other non-floor areas of nursing now and just about have enough seniority to start doing so.

Consider Social Work, you would still be advocating for patients. Health Records Coder makes a good paycheque here and involves no heavy lifting, families or fluids.

You are right there are is a time and a place to decide to change your direction in life.

Specializes in no specialty! (have to graduate first!).

You're in a tough situation. When you have to work, it is difficult to get through school. It doesn't matter what degree you're trying to persue. If nursing school seems out of reach, just consider other areas. Does it have to be patient care? As someone else mentioned, you could certainly try social work. As a matter of fact, social work is my back up plan if nursing doesn't work out as I hope. I would just do some serious soul searching.

As far as online school, I personally like online schooling. Self teaching is an ideal way for me to learn. I don't do as well in lectures. Success will greatly depend on whether you are able to self-teach really well. And as someone mentioned, you will have clinical time that is not online. But I would also check into the reputation of the online school you wish to attend. I have heard many times that online schools have bad reputations and it is harder to get a job. Just do your research.

I absolutely do not trust online nursing unless you are already a nurse and doing a BSN or MSN program. That way you already have an understanding of the information and you're primarily focued on mastery. If you have already flunked out of two nursing programs, the last thing that I would suggest is doing something as impersonal as an online program. They work for some people but if I were you considering the situation I would try to puit my entire focus and attention on NS.

You already know the source of the problem....work. If at all possible, try not to. That may be your only key. You want to give it your all this time around,. Put yourself in a position to have as much hands on, in class, one on one training as possible. You need to be able to devote all of your time to NS if necessary because it is a means to an end...and trust me it will end! But if this is your dream and you're not reday to give up...don't! It may take longer than you planned but dreams are worth waiting for!

Good Luck!

Great advice, it will take your full devotion to make the dream come true.

I feel you shouldn't give up. You should never give up on your goals and dreams you have set. If you give up on this, then you will have an excuse to give up on every obstacle that stands in your way. Remember, you can do anything you put your mind to. Just used the flaunking out twice of two nursing programs as a lesson learn. Decide and have a plan on what mistakes you're not going to let happen this time around instead of the what ifs.

I agree - after reading a lot of your past posts, you might want to consider another area in health care. Just b/c you want to be a nurse doesn't always mean that you can or will be one. With nursing, you need to learn all of the material and be able to perform the skills properly. If you cannot do this (b/c of work, family - whatever the reason), then you really cannot expect to become a nurse.

Good luck in your journey.
