When should NCLEX review start?

Published

I have been reading the threads here with interest. I just finished my first of two years in an Associate's program and have the summer off from school. Should I start reviewing NOW? I've seen people talking about completing 3000 review questions before taking the NCLEX. It seems that would take some time; is it a requirement in certain schools, or is it just a suggested review?

I am not freaked out about preparing or taking the NCLEX (yet! :chuckle ) but I do want to give myself the best chance of passing on the first time.

Should my review start now?

3000 questions is a lot of questions, but if you allow yourself enough time, you will be able to do that number with no problem. You could do 100 questions/day & have reached 3000 in one month, or you could do 50/day & reach 3000 in 2 months. I guess it all depends on when you want to take the test. I have the Saunders book, & it's a good book. I do the CD questions at home, & when I go to work, I do questions from the book. I also have the Kaplan coursebook, it's alright, but I noticed that some things are not explained very well, & Saunders does a better job of explaining things. The Kaplan NCLEX-RN Exam book is good for test-taking strategies. Good luck.

Thank you! I guess it just seemed kind of scary that someone actually got assigned 3000 questions; My review books that go w/ my textbooks have NCLEX-like questions in them, as do the regular exams we take in school. I just really want to ace the exam. (Like everyone else I'm sure!) My school has a 90.3% passing rate, so I feel they will prepare me for the most part; I just want to get that extra 9.7% percent! :)

I prefer Saunders. Smart choice............ :)

I want to get the edition that has been published since the NCLEX was re-formatted (that might not be the right word, do you know what I mean?), Do you know what year that was?

It came out Dec. 2004. We started studying for NCLEX using Sauders in January before our April graduation. Our school had a mandatory 1 day a week review class. It was great!

Specializes in Cardiac.

I have already started studying. My teachers also told us to start early. I have found that even if you don't know the topics that they are covering in the nclex book, just reading the questions and rationals will get you thinking in that nursing/nclex frame of mind. All of our tests are written like nclex questions, so when I study the book, it helps me prepare for our lecture tests.

Both the 2nd and 3rd edition Saunder's Comprehensive Review have alternate format questions. The 3rd edition has more of the alternate format questions, and is the most recent edition (blue cover). The green one (2nd edition) is still really relevant, and can be found much cheaper as a used book on amazon or half.com
