When your charge nurse has no regard for staff safety.

Published

I work in a elderly rehab unit. Currently we have a very violent man who is a/w a psych bed. This man has punched me in the chest, thrown tables at staff and twisted a drs arm behind her back.

Its really burning me out trying to care for other pt's but having to continuously keep running back to him. We have put out 3 psych emergency calls for him.

None of us are MH trained so are not equipped to deal with this.

Myself and 2 other nurses have raised our concerns but our charge nurse basically has told us to get on with it. It's impossible to provide proper care to other pt's and it's just getting to me.

Rant over.

Drop a line - and a few incident reports - to risk management. Facility liability issues might light a fire.

Agree - Risk Management is your ally in these types of situations. I'd also recommend having a very frank conversation with the patient's physician. On another note, if you have not been provided with appropriate training (e.g., CPI or SAMA) your organization needs to address this deficit or cease admitting this type of patient.

Stay safe.

Try calling the cops next time your the victim of an assault.
