When a baby is born, do they get their own chart?

Published

Or is it included in the mothers chart? I just requested medical records for my son after he was born and I put down his name as the patient. As I was driving home, I was wondering if he even had a chart? What's the norm?

Absolutely! They are a new patient, so at our facility, if they are born alive, they have their own medical record number, visit number, and chart.

Currently in my OB clinical - approximately 2 hours after birth at my facility, the newborn will have their own chart complete with it's own paperwork, MAR, assessments, labs, etc. I care for 2 patients, mom and baby.

Oh, yeah; my son had his very own hospital bill, and it was at least half of what mine was! Came in the mail before he was even a week old; no time wasted there!
