Maybe someone remembers the details. I believe the Sutther health system gave funding to Sacramento City College to expand the nursing program. I don't know if the program has actually expanded yet.

What fairshare stated is correct. I dont have any other details than that now. Sorry!

Thats true they aer not currently accepting prenursing students because as expected many took advantage of the great opportunity. But if you have your pre-reqs done they will accept your application for the nursing program which is 17 months straight through. You go 16 wks on and 1 wk off, thats why its over in 17 months instead of 2 yrs. They want to get nurses out there fast. Oh yeah and they pay the $18 per unit fee, you just have to pay for your books and uniforms. Great program if your one of the lucky ones to get in. Goodluck

I checked with a student and the SutterHealth/Sac City is up and running. The program is separate but share some faculty. All comments were positive.

I'm in the sutter "extended" program which is a joint effort of sacramento city college and sutter to get more nurses out there and working.

Let me tell you how it is in the extended program, we start with 55 students 1st semester and 2nd semester there are 43 left, it is fast and intense (16 months) so if you have a lot of family obligations or other time consuming ventures you may want to think about it, I am not kidding when I tell you it is hard.

Good points are it's fast, they pay tuition and if you make it you will most likely have a job right after NCLEX, you can find out more at http://www.scc.losrios.edu/ browse for nursing.

good luck.

note: the sutter extended and the sac city nursing programs are different in length, I think it's important to know this as sac city is longer and more "established" the extended campus defers to them.

I was also curious about the program. The website mentions that they are accelerated in that you don't get the breaks between semesters - 16 weeks on, 1 week off, as someone else mentioned.

Is it accelerated in any other way? Or is the semester workload exactly the same as the traditional 2 year programs but only less breaks between semesters.

I'm curious because of the many comments I heard about it being more time-consuming than a traditional program.

Also, regarding their selection process... if you have a 4.0 in all prereqs, do you stand a really good chance of admission or are there a lot of students with high GPAs applying. I know they are the only ADN program in the region that ranks according to GPA rather than lottery.

It isn't any harder than the sac city main campus program, it's just faster, the work load is the same, in fact, it is an identical program, in my experience a 4.0 doesn't seem to matter so much with this program, however there was talk of going back to a grade based admission system.

As it stands you need a B in your sciences (A&P, microbio, etc) so not too hard.

The sac city main campus is a lottery, they put your name in a computer pool and maybe it gets drawn maybe it doesn't, the next enrollment period you get put in twice so your odds increase...I don't think your name goes to a 3rd round.

Your best bet is to contact the dean of nursing there and get the scoop from her.

I heard you guys also have to sign a waiver stating that you will not work during the program, is that true?

Thanks for the response, Koan. I'm going to go to a workshop in March so I'm sure I'll get more info then, too. I think they have already gone grade-admission-based (versus SCC's lottery based program), at least according to what's on the website right now. It looks like they rank by GPA, # of time the class is retaken, Letters of Rec and if there are two people tied they then look at paid healthcare experience.

Nursinguy- I don't know if they make you sign a waiver but my friend works with a CNA that is currently working and in the Sutter Extended Campus program.

I originally heard that if you work for sutter they will pay for you to go to their program. They let you work part time still pay you full time and benefits and you don't have to work for them when finished, but I believe it has gone to a lottery system now and funding is tight. The nursing program at sac city has a lot more pre req's than sutter extended. However I have found that both sac city and sutter don't meet eye to eye or know what is going on. The site was suppose to open back up it must have for a day or two but it is not giving much info again.
